Anthony Dryden Marshall (born Kuser; May 30, 1924 – November 30, 2014) was an American theatrical producer, a C.I.A. intelligence officer, and an ambassador for the United States. He passed away on November 30, 2014, at the age of 90.

Early Life and Family Background

Anthony Marshall, often called Tony, was the only child of famous American philanthropist Brooke Astor and her first husband, New Jersey state senator John Dryden Kuser. When he was 18, he adopted the last name of his mother's second husband, Charles H. Marshall.

Tony had a half-sister named Suzanne Dryden Kuser, born in 1931. She worked for the U.S. Department of State and was an intelligence officer with the Central Intelligence Agency. She also advised the National Security Agency. He also had two step-siblings: Peter Marshall and Helen Huntington Marshall. Helen was married to the composer Ernest Schelling and later to the cellist János Scholz.

Education and Military Service

Marshall attended Brooks School in North Andover, Massachusetts. In 1942, during World War II, he joined the United States Marine Corps. His grandfather, John H. Russell Jr., had been the commandant of the Marine Corps before the war. Marshall bravely led his platoon in the difficult Battle of Iwo Jima. He reached the rank of captain and was awarded a Purple Heart for his service. After the war ended, he went on to study at Brown University.

Career Highlights

Anthony Marshall had a varied and interesting career, serving his country and contributing to the arts.

Diplomatic Roles

From 1958 to 1959, Marshall served as the U.S. consul in Istanbul, Turkey. During the presidency of Richard Nixon, he became the U.S. ambassador to the Malagasy Republic (now Madagascar) from 1969 to 1971.

Later, he served as ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago (1972–1974) and Kenya (1973). During the Gerald Ford administration, he was also the U.S. ambassador to Seychelles in 1976. He was also chosen as a special assistant to Richard Mervin Bissell Jr. to help with the creation of the U-2 reconnaissance aircraft, which is used for spying.

Financial and Theatrical Work

In the 1980s, Marshall worked as an officer at the United States Trust Company of New York. Here, he helped the bank manage large financial accounts for wealthy families.

He also became a successful theatrical producer. His first production was Alice in Wonderland, which was nominated for a Tony Award. In 2003, he and his wife Charlene started Delphi Productions.
