Vladimir Andreevich Steklov (Russian: Влади́мир Андре́евич Стекло́в) was a very important Russian and Soviet scientist. He was a brilliant mathematician, a master of mechanics, and a physicist. He was born on January 9, 1864, and passed away on May 30, 1926. Many of his ideas are still used in science today.

A Young Mind and His Studies

Vladimir Steklov was born in Nizhny Novgorod, a city in Russia. This was on January 9, 1864. He went to Kharkov University and finished his studies in 1887. His teacher there was a famous mathematician named Aleksandr Lyapunov.

Working as a Professor

After graduating, Steklov worked at Kharkov University. He taught in the Department of Mechanics from 1889 to 1906. He became a full professor in 1896. From 1893 to 1905, he also taught theoretical mechanics. He taught at the Kharkov Polytechnical Institute. This school is now known as Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute. In 1906, he moved to Petersburg University.

Creating New Science Centers

Vladimir Steklov had a big idea in 1921. He asked for a new place for scientists to work. This place would be called the Institute of Physics and Mathematics. After he passed away, the institute was named after him.

In 1934, the Mathematics Department became its own institute. It is now known as the Steklov Institute of Mathematics. This institute is very famous for its work in mathematics.

His Legacy and Recognition

Steklov wrote many books and papers. Some of his works were about the history of science. He was asked to speak at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 1924. This big meeting was held in Toronto, Canada. In 1926, he became a member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities.

A lunar impact crater on the Moon is named after him. This shows how important his work was.
