The Premier of Alberta is the main leader of the government for the Canadian province of Alberta. Think of them as the "head of government" for the province. What is a Premier?
A Premier is like the chief executive of a province. They lead the provincial government. Their job is to make important decisions for Alberta. They also work with other provinces and the federal government.
Getting the Job
The Premier is usually the leader of the political party that wins the most seats in the provincial election. After the election, the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta officially asks this person to become the Premier. This is called being "sworn in."

The Premier has many important duties. They work to make life better for everyone in Alberta. They also represent the province on a national level.
Leading the Government

Representing Alberta

This is where elected members, called Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), meet to discuss and pass laws. The MLAs are chosen by the people of Alberta to represent them.
History of the Premier's Role
The role of Premier in Alberta began when the province was created. This happened on September 2, 1905. The very first Premier of Alberta was Alexander Cameron Rutherford. He helped set up the new provincial government.
