Jason's Racing Journey
Jason Dupasquier started his racing career in 2011. He was very talented and won many Swiss championships in a sport called Supermoto. Supermoto is a cool mix of road racing and motocross.
Switching to Circuit Racing
In 2016, Jason decided to switch to circuit racing, which happens on special tracks. He was planning to join the Red Bull Rookies Cup in 2018, a competition for young riders. However, he got a serious leg injury (a broken femur bone) that stopped him from racing that year.
Red Bull Rookies Cup and Moto3 Debut
Jason finally made his debut in the Red Bull Rookies Cup in 2019. He did so well that he soon got a two-year contract to become a Moto3 rider. He started racing in Moto3 in 2020. This was his second season in the lightweight class of MotoGP, and he was even in the top 10 overall rankings before the weekend of his last race.
Sad Accident and Passing
On 29 May 2021, Jason Dupasquier was involved in a crash during a qualifying session at the Mugello circuit in Italy. This happened near the end of the session for the Italian motorcycle Grand Prix. Two other riders, Ayumu Sasaki and Jeremy Alcoba, were also involved.
The Accident Details
Jason appeared to fall off his bike between turns nine and ten on the track. His own motorbike hit him, and then another rider's bike also hit him. The race session was stopped right away. Jeremy Alcoba later said he thought he might have also ridden over Jason. Medical teams quickly arrived on the track and treated Jason for about 30 minutes. A medical helicopter then took him to a hospital.
At the Hospital
Jason was taken to Careggi University Hospital in Florence, Italy. Doctors performed surgery to help with a chest injury and also for a brain injury. Sadly, Jason passed away from his injuries on 30 May, at the age of 19. His team, Prüstel GP, decided not to race that day. Jason's passing was the first during a world championship event since Moto2 rider Luis Salom's accident in 2016.
Remembering Jason
Before the main Italian Grand Prix race on Sunday, the MotoGP riders held a one-minute silence to remember Jason. Fabio Quartararo, who was the leader in the MotoGP class at the time, won the race. On his victory lap, he stopped at the spot where Jason's accident happened (turn 9) and pointed to the sky. He also waved the Swiss flag when he arrived after the race, honoring Jason's home country.
On 18 June 2021, Jason's racing number, 50, was officially retired from the Moto3 class. This means no other rider in Moto3 will use that number, as a way to honor Jason.
