- The city of Yaroslavl in Russia is believed to have been started around this time.
- In Spain, Hisham II became the leader (called a caliph) of the Umayyad Caliphate in Córdoba again. He took over from Muhammad II al-Mahdi.
- The Count of Barcelona joined forces with some Muslim rebels. Together, they attacked and damaged the city of Cordoba.
Asia
- The Lý Dynasty began in Vietnam (or possibly in 1009). This new dynasty moved the capital city to Hanoi.
- The famous Persian poet Ferdowsi finished writing his epic poem called The Shahnameh (which means "Book of Kings").
- In Korea, the king of the Goryeo kingdom was removed from power in a rebellion. This led to an invasion by the Liao Dynasty. The Korean capital city of Gaegyeong was burned during this conflict, known as the Second Goryeo-Khitan War.
- Song Zhun from the Song Dynasty in China completed a huge atlas of China. This atlas was based on the earlier work of geographer Lu Duosun. It had 1,556 chapters with maps of every region, city, town, and village. This amazing project took 39 years to finish!

- The Viking explorer Thorfinn Karlsefni tried to start a new settlement in North America. This happened around this time.
