Conflicts and Changes in Leadership
In 1012, a major rebellion began in Ireland. A leader named Mael Morda started fighting against Brian Boru, who was a powerful High King of Ireland. This conflict was very important and would lead to the famous Battle of Clontarf just two years later, in 1014.
Meanwhile, in what is now Spain, there was a change in leadership for the Umayyad rule in Cordoba. Sulayman became the caliph again, taking over from Hisham II. A caliph was a very important religious and political leader in the Islamic world.
Religious Leaders and Decisions
The year 1012 also saw a new leader for the Catholic Church. Benedict VIII became the pope. The pope is the head of the Catholic Church. At the same time, there was also someone called Gregory, who claimed to be pope but was not officially recognized. He was known as an antipope.
Sadly, in England, Archbishop Alphege of Canterbury lost his life. He was a very important religious leader who was being held by Danish captors.
In another part of the world, Caliph al-Hakim of the Fatimid empire made a difficult order. He commanded that Jewish and Christian places of worship be closed or damaged.
Political Payments and New Rulers
Back in England, King Aethelred had to make a payment known as Danegeld. This was a large amount of money paid to Viking invaders to stop them from attacking England. It was a way to buy peace, even if it was only for a short time.
In Central Europe, a new duke took charge of Bohemia. Oldrich became the new duke, following after Jaromir. A duke was a powerful ruler of a region or territory.
