Europe's Big Changes
New Emperor in Germany
On February 14, a special event happened in Europe. Pope Benedict VIII officially recognized and crowned Henry of Bavaria as the King of Germany. Henry had been ruling since the year 1003, but this crowning made his power even stronger.
Ireland's Battle for Freedom
A huge battle took place in Ireland on April 23. This was the Battle of Clontarf. Irish forces, led by their High King Brian Boru, fought against several groups of Vikings and their allies. The Irish won, and this battle greatly reduced the Vikings' power in Ireland. Sadly, King Brian Boru was killed during the battle.
Byzantine Empire's Victories
In July, the Byzantine Empire fought the First Bulgarian Empire in Greece. This was the Battle of Salonica. Later, on July 29, the Byzantine Emperor Basil II won a major victory against the Bulgarian army at the Battle of Kleidion. It is said that Basil II had 15,000 Bulgarian prisoners blinded, which reportedly caused the Bulgarian Tsar Samuil to die from shock. Because of this, Basil II became known as 'Boulgaroktonos', which means 'Bulgar-slayer'.

After the death of Sweyn I, King Ethelred II returned to England. He took back his crown as the King of England. Meanwhile, Cnut the Great, Sweyn's son, went back to Denmark. Also, in Norway, a type of duel called a Holmgang was made illegal.

In Kashmir, a wise teacher named Abhinavagupta shared his important writings. He circulated his "Greater commentary" on the Pratyabhijna Darshana. This was a significant contribution to philosophy and literature in that region.
