Political Changes
- Around May, a leader named Melus of Bari started a fight against the Byzantine Empire. He had help from soldiers from Normandy. His forces won three battles against the Byzantine army.
- Around July, Cnut the Great, who was the King of England, married Emma of Normandy. Emma was the widow of the previous king, Æthelred.
- King Cnut then divided England into four main areas called Earldoms. These were Wessex, Mercia, East Anglia, and Northumbria. Each earldom was ruled by an Earl.
- The city of Kiev suffered a big fire. It might also be around this time that people started building the famous Saint Sophia's Cathedral, Kiev.

New Leaders and Religions
- Abd-ar-Rahman IV became the new leader, or Caliph, of the Umayyad Caliphate. He took over from Suleiman II.
- Hamza ibn-'Ali ibn-Ahmad officially announced the start of the Druze religion. This happened during the rule of Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah, who was the Caliph of the Fatimid Caliphate.
Africa
Conflicts and Rebellions
- In the city of Kairouan, there was a rebellion by Sunni Muslims against the Shi'ite Zirid rulers. The city was quickly taken back by the Zirids, but it was robbed and badly damaged.
