Changes in Leadership
New Rulers in Japan and England
In Japan, on March 10, Emperor Sanjō decided to give up his throne. His cousin, Emperor Go-Ichijō, who was only about 8 years old, became the new emperor.
In England, King Ethelred the Unready passed away on April 23. His son, Edmund Ironside, took over as king. However, Edmund's reign was short and full of battles against the Danes.
Cnut Becomes King of England
After several battles, including the Battle of Ashingdon on October 18, the Danish prince Cnut defeated King Edmund. This left Edmund as king of only Wessex, a part of England.
On November 30, King Edmund died. After his death, Cnut took control of the entire Kingdom of England, becoming its new king.
Important Battles
On March 25, the Battle of Nesjar took place off the coast of Norway. Olaf Haraldsson won this important naval battle against his former co-ruler, Sweyn Haakonsson. This victory helped Olaf confirm his position as the King of Norway.
English and Danish Clashes
Around May, the Battle of Brentford happened near London. King Edmund of England managed to defeat the Danish forces led by Prince Cnut.
End of Khazaria
In Eastern Europe, Georgius Tzul, who ruled a land called Khazaria, was captured. This happened when forces from the Byzantine Empire and Kievan Rus' worked together. This event effectively marked the end of Khazaria as an independent state.

Melus of Bari tried for a second time to fight against the Byzantine rulers in Southern Italy. To help him, he hired soldiers from Normandy. These soldiers, known as Normans, would later play a huge role in taking over Southern Italy. This event accidentally started the rise of Norman rule in the region.
