Liao dynasty facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Liao dynasty was a powerful empire in Asia. It was also known as the Khitan empire. This empire was created by the Yelü clan of the Khitan people. They started their rule in 907 AD, right after the Tang Dynasty fell. The Liao Dynasty lasted until about 1125.

The first leader of the Liao Dynasty was Yelü Abaoji. He was the Khan, or ruler, of the Khitan people who lived on the steppe (large grasslands). At first, the empire was called the "Qidan Kingdom." This name changed to "Liao" around 947.

The capital city of the Liao Dynasty was in what is now Bairin Left Banner in Inner Mongolia. Their territory was very large. It included parts of Northern China, central Mongolia, and areas like Tianjin and Hebei to the south. The Liao Dynasty was important for connecting different cultures and ruling a vast area for over 200 years.
