Important Events of 1075
- In February, Pope Gregory VII held a meeting. At this meeting, he made a rule against "lay investiture." This meant that kings and other non-church leaders could no longer choose who became church officials like bishops. The Pope believed only the Church should make these decisions.
- In April, Pope Gregory VII released a document called the Dictatus Papae. This document stated that the Pope had power over both spiritual matters and earthly rulers, like kings and emperors. He believed his authority was above theirs.
- The Revolt of the Earls happened in England. Three powerful earls rebelled against King William I of England. This was the last major act of resistance against the Norman Conquest, which had happened a few years earlier.
- The First Battle of Langensalza took place. In this battle, Henry IV, Holy Roman Emperor defeated the nobles from Saxony. This helped him gain more control over the region.
