In North Africa, a group called the Zirid dynasty made a big decision. They decided to stop following the rules of the Fatimid Caliphate, who were Shi'ite leaders. Instead, the Zirids chose to recognize the Abbasid Caliphate as their main rulers. This was a significant political shift in the region.

On December 10, a powerful woman named Empress Zoe of Byzantium made her adopted son the new emperor. He became known as Michael V and ruled the Byzantine Empire, also called the Eastern Roman Empire.
