Peter John Carlesimo (born May 30, 1949) is an American former basketball coach. He coached basketball teams in both college and the National Basketball Association (NBA) for almost 40 years. He also worked as a television sports announcer.

Carlesimo was the head coach for four NBA teams. He was also named "Coach of the Century" at Seton Hall University. He helped coach the famous "Dream Team" for the 1992 Summer Olympics. This team won the gold medal. He was also an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs when they won three NBA championships between 2003 and 2007.

Early Coaching Days

P. J. Carlesimo graduated from Fordham University in 1971. He played basketball there. After graduating, he started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Fordham.

His first job as a head coach was at New Hampshire College (now Southern New Hampshire University) in 1975. His team finished the 1975–1976 season with a winning record of 14 wins and 13 losses. They also won the Mayflower Conference championship.

Carlesimo then coached at Wagner College for six years, from 1976 to 1982. During this time, his team made it to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) once. He also coached in Puerto Rico during the summer months.

Coaching at Seton Hall University

Carlesimo became the coach for Seton Hall University in 1982. He helped turn their basketball program around. In 1988, the Pirates made it to the NCAA tournament for the first time ever. Carlesimo was named the Big East Conference Coach of the Year.

In 1989, Carlesimo led the Pirates to the Final Four of the NCAA tournament. This was a big achievement for the team. They even made it to the championship game against the Michigan Wolverines. They lost a very close game in overtime, 80–79. Carlesimo was again named Big East Coach of the Year after this successful season.

During his time at Seton Hall, the Pirates went to the NCAA tournament six times. Four of these appearances were in a row, from 1991 to 1994. He took a team that had a tough first season (6 wins, 23 losses) and made them a strong contender. His overall record at Seton Hall was 212 wins and 166 losses. Because of his success, he was called Seton Hall's "Coach of the Century."

Carlesimo also worked as an assistant coach for the U.S. national team. He helped them win a bronze medal in the 1990 FIBA World Championship. He was also an assistant coach for the famous 1992 Olympic "Dream Team" that won a gold medal.

NBA Coaching Career

In 1994, P. J. Carlesimo became the head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers. Even though the team traded a star player, Clyde Drexler, Carlesimo still led them to a winning record and the playoffs in his first year. He led the Blazers to the playoffs for all three years he was their head coach. However, they did not advance past the first round of the playoffs. He left the team after the 1996–97 season.

In 1997, Carlesimo moved to the Golden State Warriors as their head coach. He coached the Warriors until December 1999. During his time with the Warriors, there was a serious disagreement between Carlesimo and player Latrell Sprewell during a practice. This led to Sprewell being suspended by the NBA for a year.

After leaving the Warriors, Carlesimo worked as a basketball analyst for television. In 2002, he became an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs. He worked with the Spurs until 2007. During these five seasons, the Spurs won three NBA championships (in 2003, 2005, and 2007).

In 2007, Carlesimo was hired as the head coach of the Seattle SuperSonics. The team had a difficult first season as they were rebuilding. However, their rookie player, Kevin Durant, was named NBA Rookie of the Year. The SuperSonics moved to Oklahoma City a year later and became the Oklahoma City Thunder. Carlesimo was the first head coach for the Thunder. He coached the USA select basketball team that practiced with the US National Team before the 2007 FIBA tournament and the 2008 Summer Olympics.

In 2010, Carlesimo joined the Toronto Raptors as an assistant coach. After one season, he became an assistant coach for the New Jersey Nets (now known as the Brooklyn Nets).

On December 27, 2012, he became the interim head coach for the Nets. The team had a record of 14 wins and 14 losses when he took over. Carlesimo led them to a strong finish with 35 wins and 19 losses. This helped the Nets get home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. However, the Nets lost in the first round, and Carlesimo was not kept on as head coach.
