Sven Pipien's Early Music Career
Sven Pipien started his music journey playing bass with a rock band called Mary, My Hope. This band was based in Atlanta. Their music style was a bit different from what was popular back then. The band eventually broke up in 1991. After they split, a collection of their songs called Monster Is Bigger Than The Man was released. It included some songs that had been released before and some new ones.
Joining The Black Crowes
Sven Pipien returned to the music scene in 1997. He joined a very popular rock band called The Black Crowes, taking the place of their first bass player, Johnny Colt. For the next year, Sven played live shows with the band. He also helped create their fifth studio album, By Your Side. This album came out in January 1999. Later that same year, a live album called Souled Out...Live! was released. It featured songs recorded during the band's tour for By Your Side.
Playing with Jimmy Page
In late 1999, the famous guitarist Jimmy Page (from the band Led Zeppelin) asked The Black Crowes to be his band for a tour. They mostly played songs by Led Zeppelin. This tour was very successful for everyone. It led to a live album called Live at the Greek, which came out in mid-2000. This album was one of the first to be released only online. So many people wanted it that the website selling it crashed for a whole day!
More tour dates were added with Jimmy Page, keeping the band busy through most of 2000. However, Sven Pipien's time with the band ended during this tour. Another well-known bass player, Greg Rzab, took his place.
Other Bands and Return to The Black Crowes
The next year, Sven Pipien joined King Bee, a blues rock band from Miami. He stayed with them until 2002. He didn't record any albums with King Bee. After leaving King Bee, Sven took a break from the music scene for a while.
In March 2005, The Black Crowes decided to start playing together again after a three-year break. They asked Sven Pipien to rejoin as their bass player, and he said yes! He remained a member of the band until they broke up in 2015. During his second time with the band, they recorded two studio albums and two live albums.
In late 2016, after The Black Crowes had broken up, Sven became a founding member of a new band called Magpie Salute. In this band, he plays with his former Black Crowes bandmates, Rich Robinson and Marc Ford.
