Taryn Manning (born November 6, 1978) is an American actress and singer. She is famous for playing Tiffany "Pennsatucky" Doggett in the Netflix show Orange Is the New Black (from 2013 to 2019). She also played Cherry in Sons of Anarchy (2008–2010), Nola in Hustle & Flow (2005), and Janeane in 8 Mile (2002).

Early Life and Childhood

Taryn Manning was born in Falls Church, Virginia. Her parents divorced when she was very young. She and her brother, Kellin, were raised by their mother in Tucson, Arizona. Taryn grew up in a trailer park with her single mother. Her mother worked hard to support the family. Taryn once said, "My mom didn't buy herself a new pair of shoes and a new outfit until I moved out." Even with money troubles, her mother made sure Taryn could take karate, dance, and acting classes. When Taryn was 12, her family moved to Encinitas, California. Her father passed away two years later.

Acting Career Highlights

Starting Out in Acting (1999–2005)

Taryn Manning started acting in the late 1990s. She had small parts in many TV shows and movies. Some of these included The Practice, Get Real, NYPD Blue, and Popular. She also appeared in an episode of Boston Public, a role that was written just for her. In 1999, she was in an independent film called Speedway Junky.

Her first big movie role was in the romantic drama Crazy/Beautiful. After that, she appeared in the 2002 movie Crossroads. In this film, she played one of Britney Spears' best friends. She also had small roles in 8 Mile as Janeane, and in White Oleander. Taryn also appeared in Cold Mountain (2003) and the romantic comedy A Lot Like Love (2005).

Taryn's big breakthrough role was playing Nola in the 2005 movie Hustle & Flow. The director, Craig Brewer, saw her picture and knew she was perfect for the part. After this, she appeared in films like Unbeatable Harold and Weirdsville. A song from her band, Boomkat, called "It's Not My Fault," was even on the Weirdsville soundtrack.

In 2007, she played Ivy Chitty in the TV series Drive. Taryn also took on leading roles in horror movies like Cult and Banshee. She even did her own stunts in Banshee, saying she got hurt during one car chase scene. She played Rita Cherry in seven episodes of Sons of Anarchy. In 2008, she was in music videos for Butch Walker and will.i.am. She also co-starred with Bill Pullman in Your Name Here, where she played a character based on Victoria Principal.

In 2009, Taryn appeared in The Perfect Age of Rock 'n' Roll. She also worked with Ron Perlman in two films, The Devil's Tomb and The Job. In 2010, she was cast in the TV show Hawaii Five-0 as the younger sister of the main character, Steve McGarrett.

In 2013, Taryn began her famous role as Tiffany "Pennsatucky" Doggett in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black. In 2015, she played Michelle Knight in the Lifetime movie Cleveland Abduction. This movie was based on the true story of the Ariel Castro kidnappings. In 2020, Taryn starred in the thriller Karen, playing the main character, Karen Drexler.

Music Career Journey

Early Pop Music and Boomkat (2001–2011)

In 2001, Taryn tried out for the TV show Popstars. In 2003, Taryn and her brother Kellin started a band called Boomkat. They signed with DreamWorks Records. In 2002, Taryn sang a version of "I'll Take You There" with Tweet in some Gap commercials.

Boomkat's first album, Boomkatalog.One, came out in 2003. They released two singles, "The Wreckoning" and "What U Do 2 Me". "The Wreckoning" became a number one hit on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. Music from their album was also used in movies like Mean Girls, Crossroads, 8 Mile, and The Italian Job.

After a break, Boomkat released a new single called "Runaway" in 2008. Their second album, A Million Trillion Stars, became available online in June 2008. In 2009, their single "Run Boy" was released with a music video. The album A Million Trillion Stars was officially released in March 2009. Taryn also sang on the song "Lonely World" by the band Dreamers. In 2010, Boomkat released their fifth music video from A Million Trillion Stars.

Solo Music Career (2009–Present)

In September 2009, Taryn announced she was working on her own solo album. She sang her first solo song, "So Talented," in an episode of Melrose Place. Another song, "Spotlight," was featured in Hawaii Five-0 and then released online.

"Turn It Up" was her first official solo single in 2011. The music video for it came out in May 2011. "Turn It Up" reached No. 21 on Billboard (magazine)'s Dance Club Songs Chart. Taryn's single "Send Me Your Love" was released in August 2012. This song was the first single from her solo album Freedom City. It became a number one hit on the Dance Club Songs chart. She also released "Summer Ashes" in 2013 and "All The Way" in 2015. In 2017, her single "Gltchlfe" also hit number one on Billboard's Dance Club Songs Chart. In 2019, she released "The Light," "Bring Me Back To You," and "Chains." In 2020, she released "Time Wasted."

Other Projects

Taryn Manning owns an independent record label called Little Vanilla Records. From 2005 to 2009, she also co-owned a clothing line called Born Uniqorn with her best friend, Tara Jane. She has appeared in advertisements for brands like Juicy Couture and Frankie B. Taryn has been on the cover of several magazines, including Nylon and Stuff.

As of 2020, Taryn Manning lives in Palm Springs, California.

Taryn was on JetBlue Flight 292 when it had to make an emergency landing in Los Angeles in 2005. The plane's nose gear got stuck. Luckily, no one was hurt. She described it as a very "surreal" experience.
