Tweet's Music Journey
Starting in Music: Sugah and Swing Mob
In the early 1990s, Tweet joined a music group called Sugah. It was a trio with Tweet, Susan Weems, and Rolita White. They were part of a bigger music group called Swing Mob, led by DeVante Swing. While working with Swing Mob, Tweet became good friends with another artist, Missy Elliott. Around 1999, Tweet moved back home to Panama City.
Working with Famous Artists
In 2001, Tweet was featured on Timbaland's album, Tim's Bio: Life from da Bassment. That same year, Missy Elliott released her popular album, Miss E... So Addictive. Tweet sang on one song and provided background vocals for four others on this album. Tweet also sang background vocals for other artists like Ja Rule, Bubba Sparxxx, and Petey Pablo.
First Solo Album: Southern Hummingbird
In March 2002, Tweet released her first solo song, "Oops (Oh My)". This song was produced by Timbaland and featured Missy Elliott. It became a big hit, reaching number one on the R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart and number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
In April 2002, Tweet released her first solo album, Southern Hummingbird. The album included songs produced by Tweet herself, along with others like Timbaland. It also featured other singers like Missy Elliott and Bilal. The album was very successful, reaching number three on the Billboard 200 chart. Two more songs from the album, "Call Me" and "Smoking Cigarettes", were also released.
More Collaborations and Recognition
In 2002, Tweet sang on Trina's album Diamond Princess. She also provided background vocals for many other artists, including Whitney Houston and Meshell Ndegeocello. Tweet appeared in music videos for Missy Elliott's songs "Work It" and "Gossip Folks". She also appeared in the music video for Aaliyah's song "Miss You".
Tweet was nominated for a Soul Train Lady of Soul Award for Best New Artist. She also received the Key to the City in her hometown of Rochester, New York.
In 2003, Tweet continued to sing background vocals for artists like Madonna, Monica, and Angie Stone. She also had a small role in the movie Honey and contributed a song called "Thugman" to its soundtrack.
Second Album: It's Me Again
Tweet started recording songs for her second album in 2003 and 2004. The album was delayed when she moved to Atlantic Records in 2004. In late 2004, she released the song "Turn da Lights Off". This song was produced by Missy Elliott and Kwamé. To promote the song, Tweet went on tour with CeeLo Green and Teedra Moses.
On March 22, 2005, Tweet released her second album, It's Me Again. Missy Elliott produced several songs on this album. Tweet's daughter, Tashawna, also sang on a song called "Two of Us". The album reached number 17 on the Billboard album charts. After this, Tweet changed managers and signed with Mathew Knowles of Music World. Tweet also sang on three songs for Missy Elliott's album The Cookbook.
New Beginnings: Simply Tweet and Charlene
In 2007, Tweet performed at the VH1 Hip Hop Honors event, which celebrated the work of Missy Elliott. Later that year, she left Missy Elliott's music company and signed with Umbrella Recordings. She started working on her third album, which was first called Love, Tweet.
In 2010, Tweet left Umbrella Recordings because her music wasn't being promoted enough. In 2011, she signed with DuBose Music Group. In 2012, she started sharing unreleased songs from her past recording sessions on her website. In February 2013, DuBose released her Simply Tweet EP. This album was recorded live with a band and reached the top 30 on the US Billboard Independent Albums chart.
In July 2015, Tweet signed with eOne Music. Her third studio album, Charlene, was released on January 22, 2016. Missy Elliott also helped produce this album. Tweet shared her excitement about working with Timbaland and Missy Elliott again. She said making the album was a great learning experience.
