Early Life and Music Roots
Teedra Moses was born and grew up in New Orleans, a city famous for its music. Later, she moved to Los Angeles with her mother and three siblings. This happened after her parents separated.
Her childhood greatly shaped her music style. Her mother was a gospel singer. Teedra grew up listening to gospel, jazz, zydeco, and blues. She wanted to listen to pop music on the radio. However, her mother made her listen to gospel music instead. The last song on her first album, "I Think of You (Shirley's Song)", is a special tribute to her late mother.
Teedra Moses' Music Journey
Before becoming a recording artist, Teedra Moses worked as a wardrobe stylist. She helped artists like Will Smith and Kelis with their clothes for videos. After breaking her leg on a video set, she decided to follow her dream. She chose to make music.
Teedra teamed up with producer Paul Poli. She signed with the indie record label TVT Records. Her first album, Complex Simplicity, came out in August 2004. Teedra wrote all fourteen songs on the album. Paul Poli did most of the music production.
The album did not become a huge hit on the main U.S. chart. However, critics loved it. It did well on other charts, like the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. It reached number twenty on that chart.
Writing Songs for Other Artists
Besides her own music, Teedra Moses has written songs for many other artists. These include Nivea, Christina Milian, and Mary J. Blige. She also helped write and was featured on two songs for Raphael Saadiq's 2004 album, Ray Ray.
Her songs have been used in TV shows like Noah's Arc and Entourage. They have also appeared in movies such as Beauty Shop and Be Cool.
Even when she wasn't releasing new albums, Teedra toured and performed live often. She was a spokesperson for the Lady Hennessy Tour from 2010. She also released free mixtapes for her fans. This was while she looked for a new record deal. Her old label, TVT Records, had closed down.
New Record Deals and Albums
On March 25, 2011, Teedra Moses signed with rapper Rick Ross' Maybach Music Group. She was their first female artist. In 2011, she released the Luxurious Undergrind mixtape.
In February 2014, she released the song "All I Ever Wanted." This song used a sample from Dynasty's 1980 song "Adventures in the Land of Music." It was the first song from her EP Cognac & Conversation. Rick Ross and Raphael Saadiq helped produce this EP.
In December 2014, Teedra signed with Shanachie Records. She said singer Avery Sunshine inspired her to join the label. Avery Sunshine was doing very well with Shanachie. Teedra's second album, Cognac & Conversation, was finally released on August 8, 2015.
Teedra's Songwriting Style
When Teedra Moses writes songs, she likes to be alone. She feels she needs her own space. She said, "I don't like other energies around me. I need to be alone, with just me and my music." This helps her be honest with her feelings.
Being honest in her lyrics is very important to her. She believes that if she is honest, people will feel it. She said, "Me being honest like that is why I've gained sincere fans." These fans connect with her honest feelings about life and love.
