Early Life and Musical Roots
Teedra Moses was born and grew up in New Orleans, a city famous for its music. Later, she moved to Los Angeles with her mother and three brothers and sisters. This happened after her parents separated.
Her childhood greatly shaped her music style. Her mother was a gospel singer, and Teedra grew up listening to gospel, jazz, zydeco, and blues.
Teedra remembers wanting to listen to pop music on the radio. However, her mother encouraged her to listen to gospel music instead. The last song on Teedra's first album, "I Think of You (Shirley's Song)," is a special tribute to her mother.
Teedra Moses' Music Career
Before becoming a recording artist, Teedra Moses worked as a helper for clothing stylists. She worked with her best friend, Nonja McKenzie. They helped artists like Will Smith, Kelis, and No Doubt with their outfits for videos.
One day, Teedra broke her leg on a video set. This made her decide to follow her dream of making music. She teamed up with producer Paul Poli.
First Album and Success
In August 2004, Teedra Moses signed with an independent record label called TVT Records. She released her first album, Complex Simplicity. Teedra wrote all fourteen songs on the album. Paul Poli did most of the music production.
The album did not sell many copies on the main U.S. music chart. However, music critics loved it! It did very well on other charts, like the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Many people now consider it a "cult classic." This means it's an album that wasn't super popular at first but gained a loyal following over time.
Besides her own music, Teedra Moses has written songs for other artists. These include Nivea, Christina Milian, and Mary J. Blige. She also helped write and sang on two songs from Raphael Saadiq's 2004 album, Ray Ray. Her songs have also been featured in TV shows and movies.
Even when she didn't release new albums for a while, Teedra Moses kept performing live shows. She also released free online music collections called "mixtapes" for her fans. This was while she looked for a new record deal. Her old label, TVT Records, had closed down in 2008.
New Record Deals and Albums
In March 2011, Teedra Moses signed with rapper Rick Ross' record label, Maybach Music Group. She was the first female artist to join the label. In 2011, she released a mixtape called Luxurious Undergrind.
In February 2014, Teedra released a song called "All I Ever Wanted." This song used a sample from an older song called "Adventures in the Land of Music." It was the first song from her EP (a shorter album) called Cognac & Conversation. Rick Ross also helped produce this EP.
In December 2014, Teedra Moses signed with Shanachie Records. She said that singer Avery Sunshine inspired her to join this label. On August 8, 2015, her second album, Cognac & Conversation, was finally released.
How Teedra Moses Writes Songs
When Teedra Moses writes songs, she likes to be by herself. She explained that she needs to be alone in her own space. This helps her be honest with her feelings and the music. If others are around, she feels like she can't be as open.
Teedra also believes it's important to be honest in her song lyrics. She said that when she is honest, people can feel it. She thinks this is why she has gained so many true fans who connect with her music. They can even remember her lyrics!
