Patrick Denard Douthit (born January 15, 1975), known as 9th Wonder, is an American record producer, record executive, and DJ. He comes from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Besides making music, he also teaches at North Carolina Central University and Duke University.

He started his music journey as the main producer for the group Little Brother. He has also worked with many famous artists like Jay-Z, Destiny's Child, Erykah Badu, and Talib Kweli. Since 2010, 9th Wonder also raps under the name 9thmatic. He often creates his music by using parts of old songs, a technique called "sampling." He has used samples from artists like Al Green and Curtis Mayfield.

Music Career Highlights

9th Wonder first became well-known in 2003. He released an unofficial remix album of Nas's 2002 album God's Son. This remix album was called God's Stepson. He shared it online, and it quickly got a lot of attention and praise. He later said he didn't expect it to become so popular. This album is now seen as the start of a trend where producers create their own remixes of entire albums.

9th Wonder began his career as the main producer for the group Little Brother. He earned a lot of recognition for his work on their first album, The Listening, released in 2003. Jay-Z's sound engineer, Young Guru, was very impressed by 9th Wonder's music. He contacted 9th Wonder, which led to 9th Wonder producing the song "Threat" for Jay-Z's 2003 album, The Black Album.

This song was a big step for 9th Wonder into mainstream music. It helped him get a major role in producing for Destiny's Child's 2004 album, Destiny Fulfilled. Jay-Z played a key part in making this happen. On that album, 9th Wonder produced the songs "Girl" and "Is She the Reason," plus a bonus track called "Game Over." 9th Wonder left Little Brother in 2007.

Recent Music Projects

In August 2010, the artist Drake and 9th Wonder talked on Twitter. Drake said he wanted to work with 9th Wonder again. They had worked together before on a song for Drake's 2007 mixtape Comeback Season. It was announced in October 2010 that 9th Wonder would produce music for Drake's second album, Take Care. However, before the album came out in November 2011, 9th Wonder shared that his work would not be on the album due to some production issues.

Singer Chris Brown recorded several rap songs using 9th Wonder's beats. The first one was released in July 2011 on YouTube. These songs were part of Brown's rap mixtape Boy in Detention, which came out in August 2011.

In June 2020, 9th Wonder, Terrace Martin, Kamasi Washington, and Robert Glasper formed a new music group called Dinner Party. They released their first song, "Freeze Tag." Their first album came out in July 2020. They have since released more music together, including Dinner Party: Dessert in 2020 and Enigmatic Society in 2023.

Hip Hop Professor and Teaching

In 2007, 9th Wonder started teaching music. He was appointed Artist-In-Residence at North Carolina Central University. There, he began teaching a class about the history of hip hop music.

His role as a music professor has continued. In January 2010, it was announced that 9th Wonder would co-teach a class at Duke University. This class was called "Sampling Soul." He explained that teaching helps keep hip hop alive by educating young people about its history. 9th Wonder also teaches a course called "Intro to Hip Hop Production."

In May 2021, Patrick Douthit joined the faculty at Roc Nation School of Music, Sports & Entertainment at Long Island University. He is a visiting professor there. His courses include the history of hip hop and how an album is made.
