Phonte's Music Journey
Starting with Little Brother
Phonte met the other members of Little Brother, rapper Big Pooh and producer 9th Wonder, in 1998. They were all students at North Carolina Central University. They shared a love for music and decided to form a group.
Their first song together was called "Speed." This led them to sign a deal with an independent record company called ABB Records. They released their first album, The Listening. This album was very successful! Because of its success, the group signed a deal with Atlantic Records.
In 2005, the group released their album The Minstrel Show. This album talked about the state of hip hop music at the time. It received good reviews, but it did not sell many copies. Later, 9th Wonder left the group, but they remained friends. They also left their record label. They then returned to ABB Records and released Getback in 2007.
Forming The Foreign Exchange
Phonte met Dutch producer Nicolay online. They connected through a music message board. The amazing thing is, they released their first album, Connected, without ever meeting in person!
The Foreign Exchange has released four albums. Their song "Daykeeper" was even nominated for a Grammy Award! This was a big honor for the group.
Phonte's Solo Music
Phonte has also sung on many songs by other artists. His lyrics often talk about everyday life. He has worked with producers like Kev Brown and Oddisee. In 2006, he was featured on DJ Shadow's album The Outsider.
Phonte released his first solo album, Charity Starts at Home, in 2011. His second solo album, No News Is Good News, came out in 2018. It was even named one of the top 100 albums of that year by Bandcamp Daily.
