John M. Slattery Jr. (born August 13, 1962) is an American actor and director. He is famous for playing Roger Sterling in the TV show Mad Men (2007–15). For this role, he was nominated four times for a top acting award, the Primetime Emmy Award. He also won two Critics' Choice Television Awards and two Screen Actors Guild Awards for his work on Mad Men.

John Slattery has also been in many popular movies. You might know him as Howard Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. These include Iron Man 2 (2010), Ant-Man (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), and Avengers: Endgame (2019). He also played Ben Bradlee, Jr. in the Best Picture-winning movie Spotlight (2015).

His other film roles include Flags of Our Fathers (2006) and Charlie Wilson's War (2007). Slattery also directed his first movie, God's Pocket, in 2014.

Early Life and School

John Slattery was born in Boston, Massachusetts. His mom, Joan, was an accountant, and his dad, John "Jack" Slattery, sold leather. He grew up with five brothers and sisters. When he was a young boy, he really wanted to be a baseball player.

Slattery is from an Irish family and was raised Catholic. He went to high school at Saint Sebastian's School in Massachusetts. Later, he earned a degree in Fine Arts from The Catholic University of America in 1984.

Acting Roles

Besides his famous role in Mad Men, Slattery has appeared in many other TV shows. He played Al Kahn in Homefront and Senator Walter Mondale in From the Earth to the Moon. He was also on Will & Grace as Will Truman's brother, Sam.

You might remember him as politician Bill Kelley on Sex and the City. He also played Principal Dennis Martino on Ed. From 2004 to 2007, he had a recurring role as Victor Lang on Desperate Housewives. Victor was Gabrielle Solis's second husband.

In movies, Slattery played Paul Moore in Mona Lisa Smile, starring Julia Roberts. He was also in Sleepers as a teacher. He appeared in the war film Flags of our Fathers and as a CIA official in Charlie Wilson's War. In The Adjustment Bureau, he played Richardson, a mysterious agent.

Directing Movies

In 2013, John Slattery directed his first full-length movie, God's Pocket. He also helped write the script for the film. This movie was shown for the first time at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.

He has also directed episodes for TV shows. These include five episodes of Mad Men and three episodes of the series Love. In 2023, he directed the film Maggie Moore(s).

Personal Life

John Slattery married actress Talia Balsam in 1998. Interestingly, Talia Balsam also played his character's wife, Mona, on Mad Men. They have one son together. The family lives in SoHo, Manhattan, a neighborhood in New York City.

Awards and Recognition

John Slattery has received many awards and nominations for his acting. He was nominated four times for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role in Mad Men.

He won two Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series with the cast of Mad Men. He also won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for the movie Spotlight in 2015.

For Spotlight, he also received the Robert Altman Award at the Independent Spirit Awards. He won the Gotham Independent Film Award for Ensemble Performance and the Satellite Award for Best Cast in a Motion Picture, both for Spotlight.
