John M. Slattery Jr. (born August 13, 1962) is an American actor and director. He is famous for playing the character Roger Sterling in the popular TV drama series Mad Men from 2007 to 2015. This role earned him four nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award.

Many people also know him as Howard Stark, the father of Iron Man, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He appeared in movies like Iron Man 2 (2010), Ant-Man (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), and Avengers: Endgame (2019). He was also in the Oscar-winning movie Spotlight (2015).

Early Life and Family

John Slattery was born in Boston, Massachusetts. His mother, Joan, was an accountant, and his father, John, was a leather merchant. He is one of six children. When he was a young boy, he dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player.

Slattery's family has Irish roots, and he was raised in the Catholic faith. He went to high school at Saint Sebastian's School. In 1984, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from The Catholic University of America.

Acting Career

Television Roles

Slattery's most famous television role was as Roger Sterling in Mad Men. For his work on the show, he won two Screen Actors Guild Awards along with the rest of the cast. He also directed five episodes of the series.

He has appeared in many other well-known TV shows. He played Victor Lang, the husband of Gabrielle Solis, on Desperate Housewives. He also had roles in the comedy series 30 Rock and Arrested Development. More recently, he appeared in the miniseries Mrs. America (2020) and the drama The Good Fight (2022).

Some of his other guest appearances include shows like Will & Grace, ... and the City, and The Simpsons, where he voiced a character.

Movie Roles

Besides playing Howard Stark in the Marvel movies, Slattery has acted in many other films. In 2015, he played the journalist Ben Bradlee Jr. in Spotlight. The movie won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
