Eduardo Henrique Accioly Campos (born August 10, 1965 – died August 13, 2014) was a Brazilian politician. He served as a congressman and governor. Eduardo was born and grew up in Recife, a city in Northeast Brazil. He studied Economics at the Federal University of Pernambuco.

Eduardo Campos's grandfather, Miguel Arraes, was a governor of Pernambuco. He made Eduardo his Financial Secretary. Later, Eduardo became a federal congressman. He helped bring federal money to Pernambuco for big projects. These included a shipyard, railways, and an oil refinery.

As Brazil's Minister for Science and Technology, he supported important research. This included studies on stem cells. He then served two terms as governor of his home state, Pernambuco. During his time as governor, he improved hospitals and schools. He also supported wind power and helped farmers. He worked to reduce crime and assist people in need.

In 2014, he ran for president of Brazil. He was the leader of the Brazilian Socialist Party. He traveled across the country to meet people. Eduardo Campos died on August 13, 2014. This was just three days after his 49th birthday. His plane crashed in bad weather in the city of Santos.

About Eduardo Campos

Eduardo Campos studied Economics at the Federal University of Pernambuco. He was married to Renata Campos. They had five children: Maria Eduarda, João Henrique, Pedro Henrique, José Henrique, and Miguel. His son, João Henrique, later became a federal representative. He was also elected mayor of Recife.

Eduardo was the grandson of Miguel Arraes. Miguel Arraes was a former Governor of Pernambuco. Eduardo's mother was Ana Arraes, a Minister of the Court of Accounts. His father was Maximiliano Campos. Eduardo Campos was a Roman Catholic.

Eduardo Campos's Political Journey

Eduardo Campos started in politics while still at university. He was elected president of his Economics College Student Center. In 1986, he chose to work on his grandfather's campaign. His grandfather, Miguel Arraes, was running for governor of Pernambuco. Eduardo helped him get elected.

When his grandfather became governor in 1987, Eduardo became his Chief of Staff. During this time, he helped create important new offices. These included the first Science and Technology Secretariat of the Northeast. He also helped start the Science and Technology Support Foundation (Facepe).

Becoming a State Representative

In 1990, Campos joined the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB). In the same year, he was elected as a state representative. This means he helped make laws for the state of Pernambuco. He won an award called Leão do Norte for being a very active member.

Working in the National Congress

In 1994, Eduardo Campos was elected as a Federal Representative. This meant he worked in the National Congress in Brasília. He received many votes, showing people trusted him. He later took a break to work for Miguel Arraes's government again. He was the Government Secretary and Treasury Secretary.

In 1998, he ran for Federal Representative again. He received a record number of votes in the state. In 2002, as a Federal Congressman for the third time, he helped with important government reforms. These included changes to social welfare and taxes. For three years, he was named one of the 100 most influential members of the National Congress.

Leading Science and Technology

In 2004, Eduardo Campos became the Minister of Science and Technology. He was the youngest minister chosen by President Lula. As minister, he helped update Brazil's plans for science and technology. He also reviewed programs for space and nuclear energy.

A major achievement was the approval of the Biosafety Program. This allowed the use of embryonic stem cells for research. It also allowed research on trans-genetics. He also helped pass the Technological Innovation Law. This law made it easier for businesses, universities, and research groups to work together. Another important project was creating the Brazilian Public Schools Mathematics Olympics. This is one of the biggest math competitions in the world.

Leading the Brazilian Socialist Party

In 2005, Campos became the national president of the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB). He left this role in 2006 to run for governor of Pernambuco. In 2011, he was re-elected as the party's president. He held this position until 2014.

Governor of Pernambuco

Eduardo Campos ran for governor of Pernambuco in 2006. He started the election in third place in the polls. But he won with over 60% of the votes in the second round. People liked his government and he was very popular.

In 2010, he ran for re-election. He had the support of President Lula. Campos was re-elected with over 80% of the votes in the first round. This made him the most voted governor in Brazil at that time.

Eduardo Campos's Government Achievements

Campos was the Governor of Pernambuco for seven years (2007–2014). His government received many awards. In 2012, Pernambuco won two United Nations Public Service Awards. One was for involving people in policy decisions. The other was for helping women through the Women's Straw Hat Project. These awards were given at the UN Headquarters in New York.

In public safety, crime rates went down. This was thanks to a program called Pact for Life. The number of homicides dropped by 39.10%. Theft and robbery also decreased by 30.3% between 2007 and 2013. In 2013, the Pact for Life Program received an award in Washington D.C. for preventing crime. Campos also received the Governance Award for good leadership.

During his time, Pernambuco's economy grew faster than the average for Brazil. Investments in the state also increased a lot.

In Health, three new hospitals were built in the Recife area. Also, 14 Emergency Care Units (UPAs) were opened. The number of Intensive Care Unit beds also increased. Between 2006 and 2013, people in Pernambuco lived longer. The state also reduced child mortality by 47.5%.

In Education, the Basic Education Development Index (BEDI) grew by 14.8% between 2007 and 2011. This was more than double the national average. Students from Pernambuco's Technical Schools performed much better than students in other states.

Presidential Campaign

In October 2013, Eduardo Campos announced a partnership with Marina Silva. She was a former Senator and Environment minister. In April 2014, Eduardo Campos announced he would run for president in the 2014 Brazilian general election. Marina Silva was chosen as his running mate for vice president.

His Passing

On August 13, 2014, Eduardo Campos was traveling for his presidential campaign. He was flying to Santos with his team. The plane, a Cessna Citation, crashed in a residential area of Santos. This happened at 9:50 AM during bad weather. All seven people on board died.

After his death, Brazil's president, Dilma Rousseff, declared a period of official mourning. The city of Recife also mourned.

Campos was buried in the Santo Amaro cemetery in Recife on August 17. President Rousseff and other political leaders attended the ceremony. Over 100,000 people joined the funeral procession. The day after his burial, Marina Silva took over as the presidential candidate.
