Robert George Wiesler (born August 13, 1930 – died August 10, 2014) was a talented American baseball player. He was a pitcher in Major League Baseball (MLB). Bob played for the New York Yankees and the Washington Senators. He played in parts of five seasons between 1951 and 1958. Bob was tall, standing 6 feet 3 inches. He could hit from both sides of the plate (a switch-hitter) and threw with his left hand.

Bob Wiesler's Early Baseball Days

Bob Wiesler started his baseball journey in his hometown. The New York Yankees signed him in 1949. He was still in high school at Beaumont High School in St. Louis, Missouri.

Rising Through the Minor Leagues

Bob quickly began playing in the Minor Leagues. In 1949, he joined the Independence Yankees. He had a great first year, winning 12 games and losing 11. Bob also led the league with an amazing 240 strikeouts. His team won the regular season and the playoffs that year.

The next year, in 1950, Bob moved up to the Joplin Miners. He was even better, winning 15 games and completing 11 games. He also pitched two shutouts, meaning the other team scored no runs. Bob led his league with a low 2.35 ERA. He also had 277 strikeouts, earning him an All-Star spot.

In 1951, Bob played for the Kansas City Blues. He continued to impress, winning 10 games and striking out 162 batters. This was his third year in a row leading his league in strikeouts.

Playing in Major League Baseball

Bob Wiesler's strong pitching earned him a spot in the big leagues. He joined the New York Yankees on August 3, 1951. He played in four games that season.

Serving His Country

After his first taste of MLB, Bob was called to serve. He joined the United States Army. He missed the entire 1952 baseball season. Bob served during the Korean War conflict.

Back with the Yankees

Life After Baseball
