Lou Whittaker (born February 10, 1929 – died March 24, 2024) was a famous mountaineer, a person who climbs mountains. He was also a mountain guide, helping others climb safely, and an entrepreneur, meaning he started businesses. Lou and his twin brother, Jim Whittaker, were both well-known climbers and guides. They were born and grew up in Seattle, Washington.

Lou Whittaker: A Mountain Legend

Lou Whittaker was an amazing climber who explored mountains all over the world. He became especially skilled at guiding people across glaciers (large sheets of ice). He did this by climbing Mount Rainier over 250 times! That's a lot of trips to the top of a huge mountain.

Building a Climbing Legacy

Lou Whittaker didn't just climb mountains; he also helped others do it safely. He started a company called Rainier Mountaineering Inc, which is now known as RMI Expeditions. This company helps people climb Mount Rainier.

He also created many successful businesses related to climbing. These businesses were located at the Rainier Base Camp in Ashford, right next to Mount Rainier National Park. Lou trained many generations of mountain guides there. Many of these guides still lead climbs today, all around the world.

Historic Climbs

In 1984, Lou Whittaker led a very important climb. He was the leader of the first American team to reach the North Col of Mount Everest. Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world! This was a huge achievement in climbing history.

Sharing His Story

Lou Whittaker wrote a book about his adventures and experiences. It's called Lou Whittaker — Memoirs of a Mountain Guide. He wrote it with Andrea Gabbard. The book shares many stories from his life in the mountains.

A Mountain Named After Him

To honor his incredible contributions to mountaineering, a mountain in Chelan County, Washington was named after him. It's called Big Lou. This shows how important he was in the world of climbing.
