Choi Soo-young (Hangul: 최수영), known simply as Sooyoung, is a famous South Korean singer, actress, and songwriter. She was born on February 10, 1990. Sooyoung first started her career in Japan in 2002 as part of a singing duo called Route 0.

After returning to South Korea, she became a member of the hugely popular girl group Girls' Generation in 2007. This group became one of the most well-known K-pop groups around the world. Besides her music, Sooyoung has also starred in many television dramas and movies.

In October 2017, Sooyoung left her first music company, SM Entertainment. However, she continued to be a member of Girls' Generation. She later released her first solo song, "Winter Breath," in 2018. In October 2024, she made her solo debut in Japan with the song "Unstoppable."

Early Life and School

Choi Soo-young was born in Gwangju, Gyeonggi, South Korea. Her older sister, Choi Soo-jin, is also an actress who performs in musical theater.

Sooyoung finished high school at JeongShin Women's High School in 2009. She then studied film at Chung-Ang University and graduated in February 2016. She even received a special award at her graduation ceremony for her achievements. Another member of Girls' Generation, Kwon Yuri, also went to the same university.

Sooyoung's Career Journey

Starting Her Career (2000–2007)

Sooyoung was first discovered by SM Entertainment when she was in fifth grade. This happened during an open audition. In 2002, she won first place in a special audition in Korea and Japan. This led to her debut in Japan as part of the duo Route 0. The duo released three songs before they stopped performing together in 2003.

After that, Sooyoung returned to SM Entertainment. She then officially debuted in South Korea in August 2007 as a member of the girl group Girls' Generation.

Acting and Songwriting (2008–2016)

Girls' Generation became very famous after their hit song "Gee" came out in 2009. Sooyoung has shared that she was interested in acting even before she became a singer. She tried out for more than 70 roles before her debut!

Besides her group activities, Sooyoung also worked on many music and acting projects. At first, she had small roles and made guest appearances in TV shows and movies. She also recorded songs, including "KKok" with Girls' Generation member Yuri. She also sang "Feeling Only You" with Tiffany and the duo The Blue.

Sooyoung also showed her talent as a songwriter. She wrote the lyrics for three songs: "How Great is Your Love" (2011), "What Do I Do" (2016), and "Sailing (0805)" (2016). She also helped write "Baby Maybe" (2013).

In September 2012, she got her first main acting role in the medical drama The Third Hospital. People praised her acting, especially her ability to show strong emotions. In May 2013, she starred in the romantic comedy Dating Agency: Cyrano. She played an expert who helps people find love. Critics said she played the character very well and naturally.

In September 2014, Sooyoung took on a main role in the drama My Spring Days. She played a patient who received a heart transplant. This role was a big success for her. She won "Best Actress" at the 2014 MBC Drama Awards and an "Excellence Award" at the 2015 Korea Drama Awards. She also sang a song for the drama's soundtrack called "Wind Flower."

In 2015, Sooyoung starred in a special drama called Perfect Sense. This drama was made to help people understand those with visual impairments. She played a visually impaired teacher. In June 2016, she starred in the crime drama Squad 38.

New Agency and More Acting (2017–Present)

In August 2017, Sooyoung starred in the web drama Someone You Might Know. Later that month, she played the main female role in the drama Man in the Kitchen. In November 2017, her contract with SM Entertainment ended, and she joined Echo Global Group. Even with this change, she remained a member of Girls' Generation.

In 2018, Sooyoung appeared in the Korean-Japanese film Memories of a Dead End and the action comedy Miss & Mrs. Cops. In December 2018, she released her first solo song since leaving SM Entertainment, called "Winter Breath."

In May 2019, Sooyoung signed with a new company, Saram Entertainment. She continued her acting career, starring in the drama Tell Me What You Saw in February 2020.

In 2020, Sooyoung starred in the romance drama Run On. In 2021, she appeared in the romantic comedy So I Married the Anti-fan and the Netflix series Move to Heaven.

In 2022, she starred in the drama If You Wish Upon Me as a nurse. Sooyoung also helped write two songs, "Seventeen" and "Villain," for Girls' Generation's 15th-anniversary album, Forever 1, which was released in 2022.

In October 2024, Sooyoung released her first Japanese solo song, "Unstoppable." She also has a movie called Ballerina coming out in 2025.

Personal Life

Sooyoung has been in a relationship with actor Jung Kyung-ho since 2013.

Helping Others (Philanthropy)

Sooyoung is very active in charity work. In 2012, she became an ambassador for Korea's Retinitis Pigmentosa Society. This organization helps people with a specific eye disease. She has continued to support research and raise money for patients with this condition.

In 2016, Sooyoung even started her own clothing brand called Beaming Effect. The goal was to raise awareness for Retinitis Pigmentosa. She has held many charity events and bazaars over the years, donating all the money to help find a cure.

Sooyoung has also been an ambassador for other important causes. These include the Korean Day of Overcoming Rare Diseases and the National Disability Awareness Improvement Campaign. In 2014, she even helped pay for a heart operation for someone after playing a character who received a heart transplant in her drama My Spring Days.
