Kwon Yu-ri (Hangul: 권유리), known simply as Yuri, is a South Korean singer, actress, and songwriter. She was born on December 5, 1989. Yuri became famous as a member of the girl group Girls' Generation in August 2007. This group became one of the most popular and well-known girl groups in South Korea and around the world.
Besides her group activities, Yuri has acted in many TV shows. Some of these include Fashion King (2012), Local Hero (2016), Innocent Defendant (2017), Bossam: Steal the Fate (2021), and Good Job (2022). She also made her movie debut in No Breathing in 2013. In 2018, Yuri started her solo music career with her first album, The First Scene.

Early life and training
Yuri was born in Goyang, South Korea, on December 5, 1989. She has an older brother named Kwon Hyuk-joon. When she was young, Yuri tried out for SM Entertainment, a big entertainment company. She joined the company in 2001 after placing second in a dance contest.
Yuri trained for almost six years before she officially started her career. She finished high school in 2008. Later, in 2014, she became an ambassador for Chung-Ang University. She graduated from the university in 2016 with a degree in Theater and Film. She also received an award for being an Honorary Ambassador of the school.
Career highlights
Starting with Girls' Generation
Yuri officially started her career in August 2007 as a member of Girls' Generation. This group had nine members. Early in her career, she also had small acting roles. She appeared in a TV segment called The King's Boyfriend and had a cameo as a ballerina in the movie Attack on the ... Boys.
In 2008, Yuri acted in the TV show Unstoppable Marriage with fellow Girls' Generation member Sooyoung. They played high school students. She also sang a duet called "Kkok (Must!)" with Sooyoung for a TV show soundtrack. Yuri also joined a celebrity dating show called Kko Kko Tours Single♥Single.
Hosting and variety shows
In 2009, Yuri became a host for the music TV show Show! Music Core with Tiffany, another Girls' Generation member. She also appeared in K.Will's music video for "Dropping The Tears." Yuri played the piano for one of his live performances of the song.
Later that year, Yuri joined the reality show Invincible Youth. She was one of seven girl group members on the show. For her work on Invincible Youth, she was nominated for Best Female MC in 2010.
As Girls' Generation became busier with their Japanese debut, Yuri and Sunny left Invincible Youth in June 2010. Yuri and Tiffany also left Show! Music Core to focus on the group's activities.
Yuri also started writing songs. She wrote the lyrics for the song "Mistake" on Girls' Generation's album Hoot. In September 2012, she was featured in the song "Like A Soap" by TVXQ.
Acting in TV and movies
In October 2011, Yuri and Tiffany returned to host Show! Music Core. Yuri left the show again in January 2012 to focus on her first big acting role.
In 2012, Yuri made her acting debut in the TV show Fashion King. She received awards and nominations for her performance, including the New Star Award.
In 2013, Girls' Generation released their album I Got a Boy. Yuri helped write the lyrics for two songs on this album: "Baby Maybe" and "XYZ." She also appeared on the dance show Dancing 9 with Hyoyeon. They coached the contestants as "K-pop dance masters."
Yuri made her movie debut in 2013 in No Breathing, a film about swimming. She played Jung-eun, a girl who wants to be a musician. She also sang two songs for the movie's soundtrack, "Bling Star" and "Twinkle Twinkle."
In 2014, she appeared in the music video for "Without You" by the group S.
More variety shows and acting roles
In 2015, Yuri joined the TV show Animals. She was the only female cast member. She also hosted the travel show MAPS and appeared on a swimming special of Our Neighborhood Arts and Physical Education. Yuri also hosted The Rallyist, a reality show about rally drivers.
Yuri returned to acting in 2016 in the spy thriller Local Hero. She also joined the reality show Law of the Jungle, which was filmed in New Caledonia. In July 2016, Yuri starred in the web drama Gogh, The Starry Night. In August 2016, she released a song called "Secret" with Seohyun as part of SM Station.
In January 2017, she acted in the TV show Innocent Defendant, playing a lawyer. She was nominated for an Excellence Award for this role.
Solo music and recent acting
In 2018, Yuri was cast in the second season of the TV show The Sound of Your Heart. She also released a song called "Always Find You" with DJ Raiden. She then appeared in the TV show Dae Jang Geum Is Watching.
In August 2018, Yuri became part of a new Girls' Generation group called Oh!GG. This group included the five members who stayed with SM Entertainment. They released their first song, "Lil' Touch," in September.
Yuri released her first solo album, The First Scene, on October 4, 2018. The main song from the album was "Into You." The album was very popular, reaching number two on the Gaon Album Chart in Korea. Yuri performed her new songs on TV music shows.
In November 2018, Yuri appeared on the TV show Makgeolli on the Rooftop. On this show, she and other celebrities learned how to make makgeolli, a traditional Korean rice wine. In January 2019, she acted in her first stage play, Grandpa Henry and Me.
In 2020, Yuri joined the TV show Bossam: Steal the Fate as the main female lead. This show became the highest-rated drama in the history of the MBN channel.
In September 2021, Yuri was confirmed to star in the independent film Dolphin. Her performance in this movie earned her a nomination for Best New Actress at the 45th Blue Dragon Film Awards.
In December 2023, it was announced that Yuri would be part of the cast for the movie "Mist." This movie was showcased at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival Market and is expected to be released in 2024.
