Henry Bull Templar Strangways was an important Australian politician. He was born on November 14, 1832, and passed away on February 10, 1920. He is best known for serving as the Premier of South Australia, which is like being the leader of the government for that area.

Early Life and Move to Australia

Henry Strangways was the oldest son of Henry Bull Strangways. His family lived in a place called Shapwick, Somerset, in England. When he was a young boy, Henry visited South Australia. His uncle, Thomas Bewes Strangways, was one of the first settlers there.

After his visit, Henry went back to England. He studied law and became a lawyer in June 1856. Not long after, in early 1857, he moved to Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia.

Political Career in South Australia

Soon after arriving in Adelaide, Henry Strangways became involved in politics. In January 1858, he was chosen to represent the area of Encounter Bay in the South Australian House of Assembly. This was a very important step in his career.

He held several important jobs in the government. From May 1860 to May 1861, he was the Attorney-General of South Australia. This role meant he was the chief legal advisor to the government.

Commissioner of Crown Lands

After being Attorney-General, Strangways took on another key role. He became the Commissioner of Crown Lands and Immigration. This job involved managing government land and helping people move to South Australia. He held this position in several different governments between 1861 and 1865.

From November 1862 to July 1871, he represented the area of West Torrens in the House of Assembly.

Becoming Premier

On November 3, 1868, Henry Strangways became the Premier of South Australia. At the same time, he also served as the Attorney-General again. He led the government for about a year and a half. His time as Premier ended on May 30, 1870.

Later Life and Return to England

In February 1871, Henry Strangways traveled to England for personal reasons. While he was there, he decided to leave his position in the South Australian Parliament. He chose to settle back in England.

He lived at Shapwick Manor, which was his family's estate in Somerset. He spent the rest of his life there as a country gentleman. He passed away on February 10, 1920.

Even though he lived in England, Henry Strangways always kept an interest in South Australia. He married Maria Cordelia Wigley in January 1861. She was the sister of William Rodolph Wigley, another notable person. Henry Strangways was survived by his daughter.
