Lodovico de Ferrari (born February 2, 1522 – died October 5, 1565) was a brilliant Italian mathematician. He is best known for figuring out how to solve a complex type of math problem called the quartic equation.

About Lodovico de Ferrari

Lodovico de Ferrari was born in Bologna, Italy. His family had moved there from Milan. Lodovico started his career working for another famous mathematician, Gerolamo Cardano.

Early Life and Learning

Lodovico was very smart. Cardano quickly noticed his talent and began teaching him mathematics. Ferrari helped Cardano with solutions for quadratic equations and cubic equations. He was mainly responsible for solving the quartic equation. Cardano later published this important work.

Teaching and Later Years

Even as a teenager, Ferrari became a respected teacher in Rome. He got this job after Cardano recommended him for the position. Ferrari decided to retire when he was only 42 years old. He was quite wealthy by then.

He moved back to his hometown of Bologna. In 1565, he became a professor of mathematics at the University of Bologna. Sadly, he died shortly after taking this new role.

The Cardano–Tartaglia Formula

In 1545, a famous disagreement happened between Ferrari and another mathematician, Niccolò Fontana Tartaglia. This dispute was about how to solve cubic equations.

Solving Cubic Equations

Many stories say that Tartaglia spent the rest of his life trying to harm Ferrari's teacher, Cardano. However, these stories might not be true. Today, math historians give credit to both Cardano and Tartaglia for the formula that solves cubic equations. They call it the "Cardano–Tartaglia formula".
