- February 2 – A strong earthquake shook the town of L'Aquila in Italy.
- February 14 – Another earthquake hit the city of Norcia, also in Italy.
- February – Soldiers at Fort Louis de la Mobile in what is now Mobile, Alabama, celebrated Mardi Gras. This was the start of a fun tradition for the city.
- April 21 – The Company of Quenching of Fire was created in Edinburgh, Scotland. This was an early fire brigade, a group of people who put out fires.
- May 27 – The city of St. Petersburg was founded in Russia. It later became the capital city.
- May 26 – Portugal joined the Grand Alliance. This was a group of countries working together during a big war.
- July 29 to 31 – The writer Daniel Defoe was put in a pillory (a device used for public punishment) and then sent to prison for four months. This happened because he published a satirical pamphlet that was seen as libel (meaning it said false and harmful things about someone). He was let out in November.
- September 12 – The War of the Spanish Succession began in Habsburg lands. This war started when Archduke Charles was declared King of Spain.
- October – A powerful whirlwind blew down the tower of the Gan Takal in Gondar, the capital of Ethiopia. Sadly, 30 people died in this event.
- November 19 – An unknown masked prisoner died in the Bastille prison in France. This person's identity remains a mystery.
- November 24 to December 2 – The Great Storm of 1703, a huge hurricane, swept through southern England and the English Channel. It caused a lot of damage and killed nearly 8,000 people, most of them at sea.
- December 27 – Portugal and England signed the Methuen Treaty. This agreement made it easier for Portuguese wine to be sold in England.
