The Kingdom of Prussia is Born
On January 18, 1701, a big change happened in Europe. Frederick I crowned himself King in Königsberg. This meant the Duchy of Prussia became the Kingdom of Prussia. This new kingdom would grow to be a very strong country in the future. It was a big step for the region and for Frederick I.
Battles and Conflicts
The year 1701 also saw the beginning of the War of the Spanish Succession. This war was fought because European powers disagreed about who should inherit the throne of Spain.
One important battle early in the war was the Crossing of the Düna. This happened on July 9. It was a battle between the Swedish army, led by King Charles XII, and the Saxon and Russian forces. The Swedish army crossed the Düna River (now called the Daugava River) in present-day Latvia. They won the battle, which was part of the larger Great Northern War. This war was fought for control of the Baltic Sea region.
