Archibald Campbell (born July 25, 1658 – died September 1703) was an important Scottish nobleman. He became the 1st Duke of Argyll and the 10th Earl of Argyll. He lived during a time of big changes in Scotland and England.
Archibald Campbell's Life
Archibald Campbell was the oldest son of Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll and Mary Stuart. His father had lost his lands and titles. Archibald wanted to get them back.
He first tried to get King James VII to help him. When that didn't work, he went to a place called The Hague in the Netherlands. There, he supported William and Mary in their plan to become the new rulers.
This support was very important. Because of it, when William and Mary became King and Queen, they gave Archibald his father's lands back in 1690.
His Role in Government
Even before his lands were returned, Archibald was allowed to join the Scottish Parliament in 1689. He was chosen, along with two others, to offer the crown to King William. They also made William promise to rule fairly.
Archibald became a Privy Councillor. This meant he was a trusted advisor to the King. He was King William's main advisor for Scottish matters.
He was also the leader of a military group called the Earl of Argyll's Regiment of Foot. This group was involved in an event in 1692. However, Archibald himself was not part of any of the actions in the field.
In 1696, he was given another important job. He became a lord of the treasury, helping to manage the country's money. In 1701, he was given the highest title: he was made a duke.
Family Life
On March 12, 1678, Archibald Campbell married Elizabeth Tollemache in Edinburgh, Scotland. Elizabeth's stepfather, John Maitland, 1st Duke of Lauderdale, was a very powerful person in Scottish politics at the time.
Archibald and Elizabeth had four children. They were born at Ham House, a large estate near London:
- John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll (born October 10, 1680 – died October 4, 1743)
- Archibald Campbell, 3rd Duke of Argyll (born June 1682 – died April 15, 1761)
- Lady Margaret Campbell (born June 2, 1690 – died before 1703)
- Lady Anne Campbell (born January 12, 1692 – died October 20, 1736), who married James Stuart, 2nd Earl of Bute
The 1st Duke of Argyll was buried at Kilmun Parish Church.
