The year 1622 was a time of important changes and discoveries around the world. From new calendar rules to big events in exploration and politics, many things happened that shaped history.

Major Events of 1622

  • A New Year's Day: On January 1, a big change happened! The Gregorian calendar officially made January 1 the start of the new year. Before this, the year often began on March 25.
  • Parliament Disbanded: On February 8, King James I of England decided to close down the English Parliament. This meant the group of people who helped make laws for England stopped meeting for a while.
  • Events in Jamestown: On March 22, a difficult event happened near Jamestown, Virginia. Native Americans from the Algonquian tribes and English settlers had a conflict. This led to many English settlers losing their lives, and the Henricus settlement was destroyed.
  • Shipwreck of the Eendracht: On May 13, a Dutch ship called the Eendracht sank. This ship was part of the Dutch East India Company. It was one of the first European ships to reach Australia. It sank near Ambon Island in what is now Indonesia.
