Kelly Paul Oubre Jr. (pronounced OO-bray; born December 9, 1995) is an American professional basketball player. He plays for the Philadelphia 76ers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Kelly played college basketball for one year at the University of Kansas. After that, the Atlanta Hawks chose him as the 15th pick in the 2015 NBA draft. He was then traded to the Washington Wizards. Kelly has also played for the Phoenix Suns, Golden State Warriors, and Charlotte Hornets.

Early Life and Basketball Beginnings

Kelly Oubre Jr. was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was the second child of Kelly Oubre Sr. and Tonya Coleman. Kelly and his family lived in a public housing area called Magnolia for a while. Later, they moved to the Eastover part of New Orleans.

Kelly went to Edward Hynes Elementary School. He also played on three basketball teams for Milne Boys Home. In 2005, after Hurricane Katrina, Kelly's family moved to Richmond, Texas. He went to George Bush High School in Fort Bend, Texas. For his last year of high school, he moved to Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nevada. In October 2013, Kelly decided to play college basketball for the Kansas Jayhawks.

College Basketball Career

Kelly played for the Kansas team in the 2014–15 season. He was a freshman, which means it was his first year. He was named "Big 12 Newcomer of the Week" twice. He also made the "All-Newcomer Team" and received an "All-Big 12 Honorable Mention."

During that season, Kelly played in 36 games. He started 27 of those games. On average, he scored 9.3 points, grabbed 5.0 rebounds, and made 1.1 steals per game. He played about 21 minutes in each game. On April 1, 2015, Kelly decided to enter the NBA draft. This meant he would not play his last three years of college basketball.

Starting with the Washington Wizards (2015–2018)

The Atlanta Hawks chose Kelly Oubre Jr. as the 15th player in the 2015 NBA draft. Soon after, his draft rights were traded to the Washington Wizards. On December 16, 2015, he scored 18 points in a game against the San Antonio Spurs. This was his highest score at that time. Even with limited playing time as a rookie, Kelly showed he could be a good "3 and D" player. This means he was good at shooting three-pointers and playing defense.

On November 28, 2016, Kelly achieved his first "double-double." This means he had 10 points and 10 rebounds in one game. It was a win against the Sacramento Kings. On December 10, he scored 19 points, which was a new career high. He also had nine rebounds and three steals in a win over the Milwaukee Bucks. Kelly was suspended for one game during the playoffs. This happened after he pushed an opposing player in a game against the Boston Celtics.

In the 2017–18 season, Kelly scored over 20 points five times. On January 19, he set a new career high with 26 points against the Detroit Pistons.

Playing for the Phoenix Suns (2018–2020)

On December 17, 2018, Kelly was traded to the Phoenix Suns. He played his first game for the Suns two days later. He scored 13 points in a win against the Boston Celtics. On January 8, 2019, Kelly scored 26 points, matching his career high. This helped the Suns win against the Sacramento Kings. Four days later, he again scored 26 points and also had 11 rebounds, which was a career best for rebounds.

On February 8, he had 25 points and a new career high of 12 rebounds. On February 13, he scored 28 points, another career high. On March 16, he set a new career high with 32 points in a win against the New Orleans Pelicans. Later that month, he had to stop playing for the rest of the season because of a thumb injury.

On July 16, 2019, Kelly signed a new two-year contract with the Phoenix Suns. On December 5, he grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds. He also scored 14 points and blocked four shots in a win against the New Orleans Pelicans. He matched his career high for rebounds again on December 28 and January 12, 2020. On February 7, Kelly scored a career-high 39 points in a big win over the Houston Rockets. He later had to miss games due to a right knee injury. He had surgery on March 3, 2020, to fix a torn ligament in his knee.

Time with the Golden State Warriors (2020–2021)

On November 16, 2020, Kelly was part of a trade to the Oklahoma City Thunder. A few days later, on November 22, he was traded again to the Golden State Warriors. He played his first game for the Warriors on December 22, 2020. He scored six points and had seven rebounds. On February 4, 2021, Kelly scored a new career-high of 40 points in a win against the Dallas Mavericks.

Joining the Charlotte Hornets (2021–2023)

Kelly signed a two-year contract with the Charlotte Hornets on August 7, 2021. He played his first game for the Hornets on October 20, scoring 14 points. On January 26, 2022, Kelly scored a season-high 39 points. He also made a career-high 10 three-pointers in a big win over the Indiana Pacers.

On November 18, 2022, Kelly scored 34 points, a season high. He also had three rebounds and three steals. On December 29, he hurt his left hand. On January 5, 2023, he had surgery for a torn ligament in his left hand. He returned to play on February 24, scoring eight points.

Playing for the Philadelphia 76ers (2023–Present)

On September 26, 2023, Kelly signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers. On November 11, Kelly was walking in Philadelphia when he was hit by a car. He suffered a broken rib and injuries to his hip and right leg. He was taken to the hospital and later released. At that time, he was averaging 16.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. His teammate, Tyrese Maxey, scored 50 points the next day and dedicated his performance to Kelly. Kelly missed 11 games before returning to play on December 6, 2023.

On March 29, 2024, Kelly was fined $50,000 for yelling at a referee during a game. On July 15, 2024, the Sixers re-signed Kelly. On December 30, 2024, Kelly had 15 points, five rebounds, and a career-high eight steals in a win against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Personal Life

When Kelly played for the Phoenix Suns, he created a brand called "Valley Boyz." This brand was a way to celebrate the community in Arizona and his team. The name started as a hashtag on Instagram in January 2019. Money from the first sales of "Valley Boyz" merchandise helped his teammate Deandre Ayton. It went towards hurricane relief efforts in the Bahamas through UNICEF. Kelly also helped design special "City Edition" jerseys for the Suns for the 2020–21 and 2021–22 seasons.

On November 11, 2023, Kelly was involved in an incident while walking in Philadelphia. He was treated for a broken rib and other injuries. On April 23, 2024, Kelly was involved in another car incident, but no one was hurt.
