What Happened in 1479

New Rulers in Spain
- January 20 – A powerful new team took charge in what is now Spain. Ferdinand II became the king of Aragon. He ruled alongside his wife, Isabella, who was the queen of Castile. Together, they controlled most of the Iberian Peninsula, which is where Spain and Portugal are located. They later took over Granada in 1492. This ended about 800 years of rule by the Moors, who were people from North Africa.
Important Peace Treaties
- January 25 – The Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Venice signed the Treaty of Istanbul. Venice agreed to give some land to the Ottomans. They also agreed to pay the Ottomans 10,000 ducats every year. A ducat was a type of gold coin used back then.
- September 4 – Another important agreement, the Treaty of Alcáçovas, was signed. This treaty officially ended the War of Castilian Succession. This war was a fight over who would be the next ruler of Castile.
Major Battles
- August 7 – The Battle of Guinegate took place. A French army tried to invade the Netherlands. However, they were defeated by the army of Maximilian of Austria.
- October 13 – The Battle of Kenyérmező happened in Transylvania, which is now part of Romania. The Hungarian army, led by brave commanders Pál Kinizsi and István Báthori, won a big victory. They defeated the Ottoman Turk army in this important battle.
Christopher Columbus's Journey Begins
- In 1479, Christopher Columbus was a sailor and trader. He lived in Portugal and was part of the Genoese community. He married a woman named Felipa Perestrelo Moniz. As a dowry, which was a gift given at a wedding, he received something very special. He got his wife's dead father's maps and papers. These papers showed the seas and winds around the Madeira Islands and other Portuguese island colonies. These maps helped him plan his future voyages.
