Chuck Greenberg (born March 25, 1950 – died September 4, 1995) was an American musician, composer, and producer from Chicago, Illinois. He became famous for his unique sound and his work with the band Shadowfax.

Chuck started his music journey in the Midwest, even touring with the famous band Bee Gees. In 1978, he moved to Los Angeles, California to continue his career.

Chuck Greenberg and Shadowfax

Chuck Greenberg formed his band, Shadowfax, in 1972. His big break came in 1982 when he started recording with artists like Alex de Grassi and Will Ackerman on the Windham Hill record label.

Shadowfax won a Grammy Award in 1988 for their album Folksongs for a Nuclear Village. This album was honored as the Best New Age Performance. Their music was special because it blended different styles like jazz, rock, folk, and world music.

The Lyricon Instrument

Chuck Greenberg was known for playing the lyricon. This was the very first electronic wind instrument ever made. He even helped develop it with an engineer named Bill Bernardi. The lyricon's unique sound became a signature part of Shadowfax's music.

Live Performances and Legacy

Chuck Greenberg performed at many famous venues around the world. These included Carnegie Hall, the Montreux Jazz Festival, Ravinia, The Greek Theater, Wolf Trap, Red Rocks, and the Universal Theater.

His last musical project was a live recording and concert with Shadowfax in Santa Cruz, California, in 1995. Chuck Greenberg passed away at the age of 45 on Santa Cruz Island on September 4, 1995, after a heart attack. He left behind his wife and three sons.
