Sarah Jessica Parker (born March 25, 1965) is an American actress and television producer. She has been acting for over 50 years in many movies and plays. She has won several important awards, including six Golden Globe Awards and two Primetime Emmy Awards.
Parker started acting on Broadway when she was 11 years old in a play called The Innocents in 1976. Later, she played the main character in the musical Annie in 1979. She appeared in her first big movies in 1984, including Footloose and Firstborn. In the 1990s, she was in films like L.A. Story (1991), Honeymoon in Vegas (1992), Hocus Pocus (1993), Ed Wood (1994), and Mars Attacks! (1996).
Parker became very famous for playing Carrie Bradshaw in the TV series ... and the City (1998–2004). For this role, she won many awards, including two Primetime Emmy Awards and four Golden Globe Awards. She played Carrie Bradshaw again in the movies ... and the City (2008) and ... and the City 2 (2010), and in the new series And Just Like That... (2021–present). Her character, Carrie Bradshaw, became very popular and is often listed as one of the greatest female TV characters.
Parker also continued to act in movies like The Family Stone (2005), Failure to Launch (2006), Did You Hear About the Morgans? (2009), New Year's Eve (2011), and Hocus Pocus 2 (2022). On TV, she played Isabelle Wright in Glee (2012) and Frances Dufresne in Divorce (2016–2019). Since 2005, she has also run her own company, Pretty Matches, which makes TV shows and movies.

Early Life and Training
Sarah Jessica Parker was born on March 25, 1965, in Nelsonville, Ohio. Her mother, Barbara Parker, was a teacher. Sarah Jessica is one of eight children. Her full brothers include actors Timothy Britten Parker and Pippin Parker.
Her mother encouraged her children to explore arts and culture. She often took them to free public events like ballet and theater shows. This helped Parker develop an early love for the arts.
As a young girl, Parker learned singing and ballet. She was soon chosen for a Broadway play called The Innocents. Her family moved to Cincinnati and then to Dobbs Ferry, New York, so she could get special training. Later, they moved to Roosevelt Island and then to Manhattan, and finally to Englewood, New Jersey. She attended Dwight Morrow High School.
Parker also studied at several famous schools for performing arts. These included the School of American Ballet in New York City, the New York Professional Children's School, and the School for Creative and Performing Arts in Cincinnati.

Parker and some of her siblings performed in a show called The Sound of Music in St. Louis, Missouri. She was chosen for the Broadway musical Annie in 1977. She first played a small role and then took over the main role of Annie in March 1979, playing it for a year. In 1982, Parker got the main role in the TV show Square Pegs. Critics praised her performance as a shy teenager.
In the next few years, Parker acted in several movies. These included Footloose (1984) and Girls Just Want to Have Fun (1985), where she starred with Helen Hunt. In 1986, she appeared in Flight of the Navigator, a Disney science fiction film.
In the romantic comedy L.A. Story (1991), Parker played a cheerful aspiring model. She also starred with Nicolas Cage in Honeymoon in Vegas (1992). In the Disney fantasy comedy Hocus Pocus (1993), she played one of three villainous witches alongside Bette Midler and Kathy Najimy. Hocus Pocus later became a very popular movie. In 1993, she was also in Striking Distance with Bruce Willis. In 1994, she appeared with Johnny Depp in the drama Ed Wood, playing the character's girlfriend, Dolores Fuller. Parker was offered the lead role in the HBO series ... and the City. The show is set in New York City and is about four women who are close friends. Parker agreed to star as Carrie Bradshaw, the main character and narrator. Carrie wrote a weekly column called "... and the City" for a made-up newspaper. Her performance was highly praised, and Carrie Bradshaw became a very popular character. Many people consider her one of the most iconic female characters in American television history.
For her role in ... and the City, Parker won many awards. These included two Primetime Emmy Awards, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and four Golden Globe Awards.
More Film Roles: 2004–2015
In 2005, Parker starred with Diane Keaton in the family drama The Family Stone. She played a career woman from New York City. Critics liked her performance, saying she handled her character's journey well. The movie was a success. She was nominated for a Golden Globe award for this role. Her next movie was the romantic comedy Failure to Launch (2006), where she starred with Matthew McConaughey.
After ... and the City ended, there were talks about making a movie version. The film, ... and the City, was released in 2008. A sequel, ... and the City 2, followed in 2010. Both movies were very popular with audiences. Parker also worked with Hugh Grant in the romantic comedy Did You Hear About the Morgans? (2009). In 2011, she was in I Don't Know How She Does It and the romantic comedy New Year's Eve.

Recent Work: 2016–Present
From 2016 to 2019, Parker starred in and produced the HBO series Divorce. She played Frances Dufresne, a married woman going through a divorce. Critics praised her performance, noting her ability to play a complex character. She received a Golden Globe nomination for this role.
In 2018, Parker starred in and produced the drama Here and Now. In February 2020, Parker and her husband, Matthew Broderick, were set to star in a play called Plaza Suite on Broadway, but it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The revival of ... and the City, called And Just Like That..., was confirmed in January 2021. The first season began airing on December 9, 2021.

Fashion and Fragrances
Parker is widely known as a fashion icon. Her unique style has been featured in many magazines and media.
In 2000, Parker hosted the MTV Movie Awards and wore 14 different outfits! She has also been the face of many big fashion brands in their advertisements. In 2004, Parker signed a big contract with Gap to appear in their ads.
In 2005, Parker launched her own perfume called Lovely. In 2007, she started her own fashion line called "Bitten" with the store Steve & Barry's. The clothes and accessories in this line were all under $20. She also released her second perfume, Covet, in 2007. In 2009, she launched three new fragrances: Dawn, Endless, and Twilight.
On February 28, 2014, Parker started the SJP Collection, which is a line of shoes sold at Nordstrom. In 2015, she became the new spokesperson for Jordache Jeans. In 2018, Parker worked with Gilt to create a collection of wedding dresses for modern brides. In November 2023, she teamed up with Lele Sadoughi for a collection of accessories.
Production Work
Parker runs a production company called Pretty Matches. She started it in 2005 with Alison Benson. This company has created shows and movies for HBO and other channels since 2009. Through Pretty Matches, they produced the series Divorce (2016–2019) and the film Here and Now (2018). The company aims to help more women work in media production.
In 2025, Parker was an executive producer for a documentary called The Librarians. This film focuses on librarians who are working against book banning in the United States. In May 2025, Parker received an award from PEN America for being a strong supporter of the freedom to read.
Books and Wine
In October 2016, Parker announced that she would have her own book publishing imprint with Crown Publishing Group, called SJP for Hogarth. In 2017, she partnered with the American Library Association (ALA) to create Book Club Central. This is an online platform that helps book clubs and readers find new books and resources. In June 2023, she partnered with Zando to create her own imprint, SJP Lit.
In 2019, Parker started working with a New Zealand winery called Invivo & Co. Together, they create a special wine each year called Invivo X, Sarah Jessica Parker Sauvignon Blanc. They also make a Rosé wine from Provence.
Personal Life
Parker was in a relationship with actor Robert Downey Jr. from 1984 to 1991. They met while working on the movie Firstborn.

Sarah Jessica Parker married actor Matthew Broderick on May 19, 1997, in New York City. They were introduced by one of her brothers. Their son, James Wilkie Broderick, was born on October 28, 2002. Their twin daughters, Marion and Tabitha, were born on June 22, 2009.
Since 2009, Parker has lived in Greenwich Village in New York City with her husband and children. They also spend time at their second home in County Donegal, Ireland, where Broderick spent summers as a child.
