The Screen Actors Guild Awards (often called the SAG Awards) are special prizes given out by a group called the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. These awards started in 1995. They celebrate amazing acting in both movies and TV shows.
The SAG Awards are a big deal in Hollywood. They are just as important as the Golden Globe Awards and the Oscars. The SAG Awards honor individual actors for their great work. They also celebrate the entire group of actors (called an "ensemble" or "cast") in a movie or TV series.
Actors who are members of the union vote for the winners. This makes the awards very special because actors are choosing other actors. The SAG Awards are often a good sign of who might win an Oscar for acting.
For many years, the awards show was on TV channels like TNT and TBS. But now, Netflix will show the awards live starting in 2024. The 2023 show was even streamed on Netflix's YouTube channel.
The very first SAG Awards happened on February 25, 1995. It was held at Universal Studios. Later shows moved to the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and then the Shrine Auditorium. In 2017, for the first time, the show had a host, actress Kristen Bell.
The award trophy is a statue called "The Actor". It's a naked male figure holding two masks: one for comedy and one for tragedy. The statue is about 16 inches (41 cm) tall and weighs over 12 pounds (5.4 kg). It's made of solid bronze in Burbank, California.
