Jean Vilar's Theatre Journey
Jean Vilar learned about acting and directing from a teacher named Charles Dullin. After his training, he traveled around France with an acting group. He started directing plays in 1943 in a small theatre in Paris. In 1947, he got a special invitation to direct the very first drama festival in Avignon.
Vilar felt that theatre at the time was only for a small, wealthy group of people. He wanted to change this! He dreamed of creating a "people's theatre" where everyone could enjoy plays. He became a big leader in making theatre more spread out across France, not just in big cities. He even started two important theatre groups: the Festival d'Avignon and the Théâtre National Populaire. His main goal was to make sure as many people as possible could experience theatre.
Remembering Jean Vilar
Jean Vilar is buried in the Cimetière Marin in Sète, just like the famous writer Paul Valéry. To keep Vilar's work and ideas alive, the Maison Jean-Vilar was opened on July 18, 1979. This special house is in the Hôtel de Crochans in Avignon. It helps continue Vilar's vision for the Festival d'Avignon and promotes theatre in the area.
Jean Vilar's Family Life
Jean Vilar was married to an artist named Andrée Vilar (1916-2009). He also worked with his sister-in-law, Valentine Schlegel, at the Festival d'Avignon.
