Ryan Scott Lewis (born March 25, 1988) is an American musician and music producer. He is from Seattle, Washington. Ryan Lewis is well-known for being part of the music duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. He produced their albums like The VS. EP (2009), The Heist (2012), and This Unruly Mess I've Made (2016). He also directed many of their music videos.

Ryan Lewis met rapper Macklemore in 2006 through Myspace. Soon after, they started working together. Ryan Lewis produced, recorded, and mixed all their music. He also directed music videos for popular songs like "Same Love", "Thrift Shop", and "Can't Hold Us".

Early Life and Education

Ryan Lewis was born in Spokane, Washington. His parents are Julie and Scott Lewis. He has two older sisters, Teresa and Laura. From a young age, Ryan loved music. He played guitar in rock bands with his best friend. By age 15, he became very interested in making music.

Ryan Lewis went to Joel E. Ferris High School in Spokane. He later graduated from Roosevelt High School in Seattle. He then studied at the University of Washington.

Music Career

Starting Out (2006–2008)

Before becoming a full-time musician, Ryan Lewis worked as a professional photographer and videographer. In 2008, he released his first collection of songs, called Instrumentals. It featured four alternative hip hop songs. That same year, he worked with a rapper named Symmetry on an album called Symmetry and Ryan Lewis.

Working with Macklemore (2009–2017)

Ryan Lewis and Macklemore officially formed their duo, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, in 2009. They released their first collection of songs together, The VS. EP.

In 2010, Ryan Lewis produced another EP called VS. Redux. In December of that year, they released their first single, "My Oh My". They followed up with "Wings" in January 2011 and "Can't Hold Us" (featuring Ray Dalton) in August 2011.

Their big album, The Heist, came out in October 2012. This album included their earlier hits like "My Oh My" and "Can't Hold Us". Another important song from the album was "Same Love", released in July 2012. The Heist became very popular, reaching number 2 on the US Billboard 200 chart.

Ryan Lewis and Macklemore performed "Same Love" on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in October 2012. They also performed "Thrift Shop" on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in December 2012 and again on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in January 2013. "Thrift Shop" became a huge hit, staying at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks!

To support The Heist, the duo went on The Heist World Tour, starting in August 2012.

In January 2014, Macklemore performed "Same Love" at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards. During this performance, Queen Latifah helped 33 couples get married live, including Ryan Lewis's sister, Laura.

In 2015, Ryan Lewis announced they were working on a new album. They released a song called "Growing Up (Sloane's Song)" featuring Ed Sheeran. On August 27, 2015, they released "Downtown". This song was part of their new album, This Unruly Mess I've Made, which came out in February 2016. In June 2017, Macklemore announced that the duo was taking a break.

Other Projects (Since 2017)

After the duo went on hiatus, Ryan Lewis continued to work on music. In July 2017, he helped write and produce Kesha's song "Praying". In August 2019, he also co-wrote and produced "Subaru Crosstrek XV" for Hobo Johnson.
