Peter James Martin (born July 24, 1875 – died March 25, 1918) was an Australian Rules Football player. He played for the Collingwood team in the early days of the Victorian Football League (VFL). He also played for North Melbourne in the Victorian Football Association (VFA).
Peter Martin's Early Life
Peter was born in Geelong, Victoria, on July 24, 1875. His parents were James Joseph Martin and Ellen O'Connor. In 1902, Peter married Lavinia M. Smith. They had four children together.
A Football Star
Peter Martin started his football journey with the Wellington Juniors team in Geelong. He first caught the eye of the Collingwood club in 1898. This was after he won a goal-kicking competition.
He made his first league appearance in 1901. He played alongside a future club legend, Ted Rowell. That season, Peter played 14 games for Collingwood. This included the 1901 VFL Grand Final where Collingwood lost to Essendon. Peter played as a wingman in that important match.
He played only one more game for Collingwood in 1902. After that, he finished his football career at North Melbourne. At the time, North Melbourne was part of the Victorian Football Association (VFA). He played for them for at least three seasons, from 1903 to 1905. Later, he played for the Garrison Artillery Football Team for four seasons.
Serving His Country
Peter Martin became a Private in the 6th Battalion. This was part of the First AIF during World War I. He was seriously injured while fighting in Pozières, France. This happened in December 1916.
Peter was hit in the head by a German bullet on December 8, 1916. The right side of his head was badly hurt, and he lost his right eye. He was discharged from the army on January 26, 1917, because of his injuries.
His Final Years
Peter Martin died from his war injuries on March 25, 1918. He passed away at the Caulfield Military Hospital in Victoria. He was buried with full military honors at Coburg Cemetery.
You might notice that Peter James Martin's name (service number 3399) is not on the Australian War Memorial's Roll of Honour. This is because he died more than a year after he was wounded. Also, he had already been discharged from the army when he passed away. So, he was not officially listed as "Died of Wounds" on any army casualty list at the time.
