Key Events of 1497
Vasco da Gama's Epic Journey
- July 8 – A famous Portuguese explorer named Vasco da Gama began a very important trip. He left Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal, with a fleet of ships. His goal was to find a sea route from Europe all the way to India.
- This journey was a huge deal because it meant ships could travel around the southern tip of Africa, known as the Cape of Good Hope. This new route would make trade much easier and faster between Europe and Asia.
Spain Expands Its Empire
- The Spanish Empire was growing bigger during this time. In 1497, the Kingdom of Castile, which was a very powerful part of Spain, captured the city of Melilla.
- Melilla is a city located on the coast of North Africa. Taking control of Melilla was an important step for Spain as it expanded its influence and power across different regions.
Savonarola and the Bonfire of the Vanities
- In Florence, Italy, there was a very influential priest and leader named Girolamo Savonarola. He believed that many things in Florence, especially certain types of art, were not good or moral.
- Savonarola organized something called the "Bonfire of the Vanities" in the Piazza della Signoria. During this event, people burned items they thought were sinful, like fancy clothes, mirrors, and some artworks.
- However, Savonarola's strong views caused problems. He was later removed from the church (this is called being excommunicated). Sadly, he was also put to death in the same public square later that year.

- February 6 – A very talented Belgian composer named Johannes Ockeghem passed away. He was born around 1410.
