Key Events of 1422
This year saw major shifts in power, particularly for England and France, who were in the middle of a long conflict known as the Hundred Years' War.
The Deaths of Two Kings
The year 1422 is most remembered for the deaths of two very important rulers: King Henry V of England and King Charles VI of France. Their passing had a huge impact on the ongoing war between their nations.
Henry V of England
King Henry V of England was a strong and successful military leader. He had won many battles against France, including the famous Battle of Agincourt in 1415. He had even signed a treaty, the Treaty of Troyes, which said that his son would become the king of France after Charles VI died. Sadly, Henry V died on August 31, 1422, at the age of 35, likely from a disease he caught during a military campaign. His death meant his nine-month-old son, Henry VI of England, became the new King of England.
Charles VI of France
Just a few months after Henry V, King Charles VI of France also died on October 21, 1422. He had been king for a very long time, but he suffered from mental illness for many years, which made it hard for him to rule effectively. His death meant that, according to the Treaty of Troyes, Henry V's baby son should become King of France. However, many French people did not agree with this treaty and supported Charles VI's own son, Charles VII of France, as their rightful king.
The Hundred Years' War Continues
With both kings gone, the Hundred Years' War became even more complicated. England now had a baby king, Henry VI, who was also claimed as King of France. Meanwhile, Charles VI's son, Charles VII, was fighting to claim his own throne in France. This set the stage for many more years of conflict and battles between the two kingdoms.
