Important Events of 1653
New Amsterdam Becomes a City
- February 2 – A very important event happened in what is now the United States. The settlement of New Amsterdam was officially made into a city. New Amsterdam was a Dutch colony located on Manhattan Island. It was a busy trading post and a growing community. This area would later become the famous New York City, one of the biggest cities in the world! Making it a city meant it had its own local government and more rules to help it grow.
The Taj Mahal is Finished
In 1653, a magnificent building in India was finally completed. This was the Taj Mahal, a stunning white marble mausoleum (a grand tomb). It was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal.
