Important Events of 1653
New Amsterdam Becomes a City
- February 2 – A very important event happened in what is now the United States. The settlement of New Amsterdam was officially made into a city. New Amsterdam was a Dutch colony located on Manhattan Island. It was a busy trading post and a growing community. This area would later become the famous New York City, one of the biggest cities in the world! Making it a city meant it had its own local government and more rules to help it grow.
The Taj Mahal is Finished
In 1653, a magnificent building in India was finally completed. This was the Taj Mahal, a stunning white marble mausoleum (a grand tomb). It was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The Taj Mahal is famous for its beautiful architecture and is considered one of the most amazing buildings ever created.
