Abraham van Riebeeck (born October 18, 1653 – died November 17, 1713) was an important merchant and leader. He worked for the Dutch East India Company. From 1709 to 1713, he was the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies.
Life and Career
Abraham van Riebeeck was born on October 18, 1653. His birthplace was the Dutch Cape Colony. This area is now known as South Africa. His father was Jan van Riebeeck, a commander there. His mother was Maria van Riebeeck.
In 1662, his father moved to Batavia. This city was in the Dutch East Indies. Today, it is part of Indonesia. Abraham and his brother were sent to Holland for their education. He studied law at Leiden University. He attended from 1673 to 1676.
After finishing his studies, Abraham became a merchant. He joined the Dutch East India Company. This was a powerful trading company. He sailed on a ship called De Vrijheyt. He arrived in Batavia in 1677.
In 1678, he married Elisabeth van Oosten. They had six children together. Their children included Johanna Maria (1679–1759) and Johannes (1691–1735). They also had Elisabeth (1693–1723). Sadly, three other children passed away when they were very young.
Abraham van Riebeeck became the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies in 1709. He held this important position until his death in 1713. He loved to explore new places. He went on many trips across the Indies. In 1712, he successfully landed in Palabuhanratu. He also managed to grow coffee plants there.
His Final Journey
Abraham van Riebeeck was the first person to reach the top of Tangkuban Perahu. This is a volcano. On his way back home, he became very sick. He caught a serious illness. He was unable to get better. He passed away on November 17, 1713. He died in Batavia, in the Dutch East Indies.
