A big step in exploration happened in 1418. The first Portuguese settlers arrived and began to live on the Madeira Islands. These islands are in the Atlantic Ocean. This was an early part of the Age of Discovery, when European countries started exploring and settling new lands around the world. It was a time when maps were changing and new trade routes were being found.
