Francis II (born February 12, 1768 – died March 2, 1835) was a very important ruler in European history. He was the last Holy Roman Emperor, a title he held from 1792 until 1806. This ancient empire was dissolved after a big defeat by Napoleon's French army at the Battle of Austerlitz.
Before that, in 1804, Francis created the Austrian Empire. He became its first ruler, known as Francis I, and reigned until 1835. This made him the only "double emperor" in history, holding two different emperor titles at the same time for a few years! He was also the King of Hungary, Croatia, and Bohemia. After Napoleon's defeat, Francis became the first president of the German Confederation in 1815.
Francis II was a strong opponent of Napoleon and France during the Napoleonic Wars. He faced many challenges and defeats. One of his toughest moments was when his daughter, Marie Louise, had to marry Napoleon in 1810.
After Napoleon was finally defeated, Austria, led by Francis and his clever chancellor Klemens von Metternich, played a key role in reshaping Europe. This happened at the Congress of Vienna. They helped bring back many of Francis's old lands, though the Holy Roman Empire was not restarted. Francis was seen as a traditional ruler who wanted to keep things stable and resist new ideas like nationalism.
