Sokkate (Burmese: စုက္ကတေး, pronounced: [soʊʔ kə té]) was a king of the Pagan dynasty in Burma (now Myanmar). He ruled from 1038 to 1044. His time as king ended when he was defeated in a fight by Anawrahta. Anawrahta then became king and went on to create the powerful Pagan Empire.

Early Life and Family

Sokkate was born on March 29, 1001. According to old historical records, called chronicles, Sokkate was the son of King Nyaung-u Sawrahan. However, another king named Kunhsaw Kyaunghpyu took over the throne from Nyaung-u Sawrahan.

King Kunhsaw married three of Nyaung-u Sawrahan's main queens. Two of these queens were already expecting babies. They later gave birth to Kyiso and Sokkate. Kunhsaw raised both Sokkate and Kyiso as if they were his own children.

Becoming King

When Sokkate and Kyiso grew up, they decided to take the throne from Kunhsaw. They made Kunhsaw give up his kingship and become a monk. After this, Kyiso became king first.

Sokkate became king after his half-brother Kyiso. He took the throne around April 1, 1038, when he was about 36 years old. When Sokkate became king, he married one of Kunhsaw's queens. This queen was the mother of Anawrahta.

The Challenge and Death

As Anawrahta grew older, he challenged Sokkate for the throne. Anawrahta fought Sokkate in a special one-on-one combat. In this fight, Anawrahta defeated and killed King Sokkate.

Sokkate died on August 11, 1044, at the age of 43. After Sokkate's death, Anawrahta became the new king. He is famous for building the great Pagan Empire.

Historical Dates

Historians use old books called chronicles to learn about the past. However, these chronicles sometimes have different dates for events. For example, the dates for Sokkate's birth and when he ruled can vary between different historical records.

The oldest chronicle, Zatadawbon Yazawin, is often thought to be the most accurate for the Pagan period. But even this book has different birth dates for Sokkate in its own sections! Historians work to figure out the most likely dates by comparing these different sources.
