Early Life and Start of Her Career
Hadiqa Kiani was born in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. She was the youngest of three children. Her father passed away when she was only three. Her mother, Khawar Kiani, was a school principal and a poet. She saw Hadiqa's musical talent and signed her up for music classes.
Even as a young student, Hadiqa represented Pakistan in children's festivals in countries like Turkey, Jordan, and Greece, where she won medals. She was also part of a popular children's music show on TV called Rang Barangi Dunya.
When she was in the eighth grade, her family moved to Lahore. There, she continued to train in classical music. She later earned a master's degree in Psychology from the Government College University.
In the early 1990s, Hadiqa hosted a children's music show called Angan Angan Taray. She sang over a thousand songs for kids on the show. She also worked as a VJ (video jockey) for a music show on the NTM channel. In 1995, she began singing for movies, like the hit film Sargam. Her singing in the movie won her a Nigar Award.
Music Career and Hit Albums
Hadiqa Kiani has released many successful albums over the years. Her music has made her one of Pakistan's biggest pop stars.
1995: Raaz
In 1996, Hadiqa released her first album, Raaz (which means "Secret"). The album was a big success and had many popular songs. It was unusual at the time for a female singer from a non-musical family to release a pop album, which made her stand out. One of the hit songs, "Maane Di Mauj," was a Kashmiri folk song that showed she could sing in different styles.
Her popularity grew quickly. In 1997, she became the first Asian singer to perform on the British National Lottery Live show on BBC One. She also toured the United States and performed at a big event in Hong Kong to celebrate its freedom from the United Kingdom.
1998: Roshni
In 1998, Hadiqa released her second album, Roshni (which means "Light"). This album became a massive hit. One of its most famous songs was "Dupatta". The music video was inspired by the movie The Matrix and was very popular.
But the biggest hit from the album was "Boohey Barian." This song is still one of her most loved songs and is considered a classic in Pakistani music. The album Roshni sold over a million copies in Pakistan, which is a huge achievement. Because of her success, she was signed by companies like Lipton and Sunsilk for advertisements.
2002: Rung
Hadiqa's third album, Rung (which means "Color"), came out in 2002. It included hit songs like "Jogi Bun Kay Aa" and "Mahi." The music video for "Mahi" was directed by the famous director Asim Raza and had a powerful message about not judging people. It was one of the most expensive music videos made in Pakistan that year.
2007: Rough Cut
In 2007, Hadiqa released Rough Cut, an album she made with guitarist Aamir Zaki. This was a special album because all the songs were in English. It was the first time a major Pakistani artist had released a full English album. Before the album came out, she released a popular Urdu song with Zaki called "Iss Baar Milo."
2009: Aasmaan
Her fifth album, Aasmaan (which means "Sky"), was released in 2009. On this album, she sang in many languages, including Urdu, Punjabi, Pashto, and even Persian. Every single from the album became a number-one hit.
One of the most famous songs was "Janan," a Pashto song she sang with Irfan Khan. The song was a huge success and was even mentioned in the Los Angeles Times. It became so popular that it encouraged other singers to sing in Pashto as well.
