Stuart Rosenberg (born August 11, 1927 – died March 15, 2007) was an American director. He made many movies and TV shows. Some of his most famous films include Cool Hand Luke (1967), Voyage of the Damned (1976), and The Amityville Horror (1979). He often worked with the famous actor Paul Newman.

A Director's Journey

Stuart Rosenberg started his career as a film editor. He then began directing episodes for TV shows. One of his first directing jobs was for the series Decoy (1957–1959). This show was special because it was the first police TV series in America with a female main character.

He also directed many episodes of other popular TV shows. These included Naked City, The Untouchables, and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. He even directed three episodes of the classic show The Twilight Zone.

Winning an Emmy Award

In 1963, Stuart Rosenberg won an Emmy Award. This award was for his excellent directing on an episode called "The Madman" from the TV show The Defenders.

Making Big Movies

After working on TV, Rosenberg directed his first major movie, Cool Hand Luke (1967). This film starred Paul Newman and became a big hit. It was about a man in a chain gang. Rosenberg found the book for this movie and helped turn it into a film.

He directed several other movies with Paul Newman, like WUSA (1970) and The Drowning Pool (1975). He was known for directing serious dramas and crime films. One of his most praised movies after Cool Hand Luke was The Pope of Greenwich Village (1984).

He also directed The Amityville Horror (1979), a well-known horror movie. His last film was an independent drama called My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys in 1991.

Teaching Future Directors

In 1992, Stuart Rosenberg started teaching at the American Film Institute. He helped teach many students who later became successful directors themselves. Some of his students include Todd Field and Darren Aronofsky.

Life and Family

Stuart Rosenberg passed away in 2007 from a heart attack at his home in Beverly Hills, California. He was married to Margot Pohoryles. They met when they were students at New York University. He had a son, Benjamin Rosenberg, who also works in film, and four grandchildren.

Stuart Rosenberg received several awards and nominations for his work:

  • In 1961, his film Question 7 won the National Board of Review's Best Film of the Year. It was also chosen as one of the Top Ten Films of the Year.
  • Also in 1961, Question 7 won the OCIC Award and the Youth Film Award at the Berlin International Film Festival. It was also nominated for the Golden Bear award there.
  • In 1963, he won an Emmy Award for directing "The Madman" episode of The Defenders.
