Early Life and Education
Richard Brocklesby went to school in Ballitore, Ireland. A famous writer and politician named Edmund Burke was one of his classmates there. After school, Richard studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He then finished his medical studies and earned his degree in 1745 from a university in Leiden, which is in the Netherlands.
A Doctor for the Army
In 1758, Richard Brocklesby became the Surgeon General of the British Army. This was a very important job, like being the main doctor for all the soldiers. He worked in Germany during a big war called the Seven Years' War. After the war, he came back to London and started his own medical practice.
He became a member of important medical groups, like the Royal College of Physicians. He also gave special talks and lectures about medicine. In 1764, he wrote a book called Œconomical and Medical Observations. In this book, he shared ideas on how to make army hospitals cleaner and safer for sick and injured soldiers. This was very important for keeping soldiers healthy.
Friends with Famous People
Richard Brocklesby was friends with many well-known people of his time. He was very close to Dr. Samuel Johnson, a famous writer. When Dr. Johnson was older and not well, Richard offered to give him money every year to help him. He also took care of Dr. Johnson when he was dying.
He was also a good friend to Edmund Burke, his old school friend, who became a famous politician. Richard even gave Burke a large sum of money to help him out.
Later Life and Legacy
Richard Brocklesby passed away on December 11, 1797, when he was 75 years old. He left his house and some of his money to his grand-nephew, Dr. Thomas Young. Thomas Young later became a very famous scientist himself. Richard Brocklesby was buried in a church called St Clement Danes.
