Stancho Belkovski (1891–1962) was a famous Bulgarian architect. He designed many important buildings in Bulgaria. His work shaped the look of Sofia, the capital city. One of his most well-known projects is the "Bulgaria" complex. This complex includes a hotel, a restaurant, and a concert hall. He also helped start a major technical school in Sofia. This school later became the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy.

Stancho Belkovski's Life and Career

Stancho Iliev Belkovski was born on August 11, 1891. His birthplace was Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. His parents were both teachers. He decided to study architecture in Germany. He went to the Berlin Institute of Technology. He finished his studies there in 1920.

After graduating, he came back to Bulgaria. He started working with another famous architect, Ivan Vasilyov. For a short time after 1925, he worked on his own. From 1928 to 1939, he teamed up with Ivan Danchov. Together, they created many of his most famous buildings.

In 1944 and 1945, Stancho Belkovski was chosen to lead a new school. This was the Higher Technical School in Sofia. He later created a special department there. This department focused on designing public buildings.

Belkovski passed away in 1962. He was on a business trip in Poland. He died in a train accident near the city of Kraków.

Famous Buildings Designed by Belkovski

Stancho Belkovski designed many important buildings. Here are some of his notable works:

  • 1923 - Vlado Georgiev house, now the Austrian Embassy in Sofia. He worked on this with Ivan Vasilyov.
  • 1924 - The Alliance française building in Sofia.
  • 1925 - Nikola Mushanov house in Sofia. This building was taken down in 2005.
  • 1930 - The Central Post Hall in Veliko Tarnovo. He worked on this with Ivan Danchov.
  • 1931-32 - The German school in Sofia. It is now the National Academy of Music. He worked on this with Ivan Danchov.
  • 1931-37 - Hotel Bulgaria with the Concert Hall Bulgaria in Sofia. This was a big project with Ivan Danchov.
  • 1932-33 - G. Semerdzhiev house in Sofia. It later became the embassy of Vietnam. Now it is the Libyan embassy. He worked on this with Ivan Danchov.
  • 1932-33 - The Students Palace in Sofia. He worked on this with Ivan Danchov.
  • 1935-36 - Andzhelo Kuyumdzhiyski house in Sofia. This is now the American ambassador's home. He worked on this with Ivan Danchov.
  • 1935-37 - Hotel Balkan with a cinema hall in Sofia. It is now the Youth theatre Nikolay Binev. He worked on this with Ivan Danchov.
  • 1936-47 - The Telephone Palace in Sofia.
  • 1943 - Aleko mountain hostel on Vitosha Mountain.
  • 1943 - Tintyava mountain hostel, also on Vitosha Mountain.
  • 1951 - The Physics and Mathematics faculty building in Sofia.
